17th International Seminar on Paste and Thickened Tailings (Paste 2014)

June 08, 2014 - June 12, 2014 in Vancouver, Canada

Hyatt Regency

The Paste and Thickened Tailings Seminar, organized every year since 1999, is the leading forum for practitioners in field to meet, deliberate, and exchange knowledge and information.

The storage of tailings deposited as slurry behind embankments on ever larger and larger mines is resulting in increased sizes of embankments, water usage, land disturbance, ground and surface water pollution and risk to downstream habitats. The competition for land and water resources increases with mine size and population density.

Technologies that reduce such resource usage, as well as decrease risks to the environment, are increasingly sought and applied. One group of technologies that has received increasing attention globally are those of producing paste, dried and/or filtered tailings, together with methods for the building of stacks of such tailings, reducing the requirement for dams and minimizing water usage.

The oil sands mines of western Canada have in recent years spent hundreds of millions of dollars researching and implementing paste, drying, and stacking technologies for the fines fraction of their tailings. This research and application has numerous novel aspects, including advances in paste distribution, in-line flocculation, spreading drying, reworking, harvesting, and stacking by various methods. These mines have also advanced the science of hydraulic stacking of the sands fraction at placement rates and height advance rates that have set precedents worldwide. The knowledge that has been acquired will be of value to practitioners from all over the world.
