GSSA - An Introduction to Structural Geology for the Mine Geologist

May 25, 2014 - May 25, 2014 in Johannesburg, South Africa

Glen Hove Conferencing, 52 Glenhove Road, Melrose

A ONE-DAY COURSE FOR A MAXIMUM 50 DELEGATES Friday 25 May 2012 Glen Hove Conferencing, 52 Glenhove Road, Melrose, Johannesburg

The fifth edition of the Seminar will be held on 22 and 23 May 2014 in the Mazatlan International Center and accompany us in organizing the State Government of Sinaloa and the Directorate General of Mining Promotion of the Ministry of Economy.

ABOUT THE COURSE The first session will give an overview of stress and strain concepts in order to provide a basis for the rest of the course. A significant amount of time will be devoted to faulting followed by a session on folding. The final sessions will deal with mapping and borehole logging techniques. This is intended as a practical introductory course, keeping theory to a minimum.

PRESENTER Dr Andy Killick obtained his initial training in structural geology from Professor John Ramsay at the Imperial College of Science & Technology. He was subsequently awarded a PhD, supervised by Professor Chris Roering for a thesis “Pseudotachylites of the West Rand Goldfield, Witwatersrand Basin, South Africa” from the University of Johannesburg. Andy applied his structural skills as an exploration geologist as an applied research geologist working for a mining finance house and as a consulting geologist. He has presented several practical courses on faulting to geologists in industry.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND? This introductory course is designed for geologists who have an undergraduate degree in geology and require a refresher or exposure to tools and techniques to enable them to better understand the geological structure of the environment within which they work. Geologists who are engaged in mapping or the interpretation of geological structure are likely to benefit from this course.
