Soon or later, any mine will come to the end of its operative life. Regardless how extended are the ore reserves, they will always be finite. That makes mining different from any other activity. That also means that closure should be planned from a very early stage of the project, even before the mine design.
What will come after the closure is a central question that should guide the whole project definition and design. More than designing the closure, the whole mining operation should be designed for the closure, taking into account the not everything will come to the end with the mine closure.
The future use of the land and the future of communities should be the main drivers of the planning. These and other related topics will be addressed during the Planning for Closure 2016 Congress.
PLANNING FOR CLOSURE 2016 will provide an outstanding opportunity for mining industry and related professionals to share their experiences, discuss the latest issues and attempt to answer the important questions on how to integrate planning for closure from the initial stage of their mining project and all along the mine life. This Congress aims to:
- Promote the exchange of knowledge and experience in the design, planning and operation of mine closure.
- Discuss emerging developments and identify best practices in mine closure as well as methodologies for risk assessment.
- Analyse criteria for the design and cost evaluation of mine closure.
- Promote the development of an interdisciplinary, international network for technical collaboration and exchange among professionals in the field.
