01-03 Dec 2015: Advanced Tailings and Mine Waste Facility Design, Construction, Operation, and Closure

December 01, 2015 - December 03, 2015 | Live Webcast,

Summary

The Advanced Tailings and Mine Waste Facility lecture will cover recent advances in tailings facility design, construction, operation, and closure. This course is intended to provide anyone responsible for the hands-on management of tailings facilities, with a detailed update on the latest research, practices, and successes in mine tailings management.

The course draws on the findings and recommendations made by expert panels, and mining industry groups, with respect to the 2014 failure of the Mount Polley tailing facility in British Columbia, Canada, as well as other facilities' failures between 2012 - 2015. Mount Polley’s expert panel recommendations regarding best available technology, and best in practice management systems, are discussed in light of case histories that have, and will benefit from advances in technical and management approaches.

Jack Caldwell will present on the engineering issues of best available technologies, and will discuss appropriate management systems for advanced tailings facility design, through closure. Guest speakers from Patterson & Cooke will bring us up-to-date on recent advances in processing and treating tailings, and managing them safely. Patrick Littlejohn from BioteQ will speak to current and advanced water treatment technologies for tailings management.

The webcast will draw on various technical papers published in 2015. Specifically, this course includes discussions on the best technical papers that will be presented at the Tailings and Mine Waste Conference. This webcast gives attendees an opportunity to consider new and innovative practices in tailings and mine waste management.

Students who are new to this topic and need an introduction to tailings management should consider registering for Responsible Tailings Management 101, to be held 2 months prior to this webcast.
