The EIACP Programme Centre (RP), Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad organized a series of activities on the occasion of World Environment Day, observed on June 5th, 2025 (Thursday) at IIT(ISM) Dhanbad. This year’s global theme, “Ending Plastic Pollution Globally”, under the campaign #BeatPlasticPollution, emphasizes the critical need to reduce plastic waste through responsible choices, sustainable practices, and collective action. The campaign encourages individuals, especially young minds, to recognize the urgency of this environmental issue and to take steps to combat plastic pollution at its source.
To commemorate this important day, the following events were organized:
- Yoga Session – in collaboration with Sports & Physical Education Centre, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad. To promote holistic well-being by encouraging a healthy lifestyle that aligns with sustainable living and environmental harmony.
- Plantation Drive – in collaboration with Horticulture Section, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad. To foster a hands-on approach to environmental conservation and promote climate resilience.
- Sit-&-Draw Competition / Poster Making Competition – to encourage students to creatively express their understanding and solutions regarding plastic pollution.
Event 01:
The day began with an energizing one-hour Yoga Session from 6:30 AM to 7:30 AM at the Student Activity Centre (SAC), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, and aimed to promote holistic well-being and mindfulness in alignment with environmental consciousness.
The event was inaugurated by Prof. Sanjoy Mandal - Associate Dean Associate Dean, Students Activities (Students Welfare), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, alongside Prof. Suresh Pandian E. - Associate Professor, Department of ESE & Coordinator, EIACP (PC-RP), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad. Their encouraging presence set a positive tone for the session, highlighting the importance of integrating wellness practices into daily life for a sustainable future.
Around 80 participants, including faculty members, students, staff, and young minds, enthusiastically took part in the yoga session. The participation included both men and women, reflecting a diverse and inclusive gathering that embraced the spirit of collective wellness. The program featured guided yoga and meditation practices, breathing exercises (pranayama), an introduction to the yogic lifestyle, and a brief talk emphasizing the connection between personal wellness and environmental sustainability. The session was conducted by Yoga Instructor - Mr. Ajay Kumar, who led the participants through a rejuvenating and insightful experience. This yoga session served as a meaningful initiative to reinforce the message of harmony between health and nature, encouraging participants to adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives.
Event 02:
Following the Yoga Session a Plantation Drive was conducted from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM. The drive was inaugurated by Prof. Sukumar Mishra – Director, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad and his wife Mrs. Sakuntala Mishra – President, Deepti Ladies Club, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, in the presence of Prof. Alok Sinha – HOD, Dept. of ESE & Coordinator, EIACP (PC-RP), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad; Prof. Manish Kumar Jain – Professor, Dept. of ESE; Prof. Vipin Kumar – Professor, Dept. of ESE; and Prof. Brijesh Kumar Mishra – Associate Professor, Dept. of ESE, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad.
The drive witnessed enthusiastic participation from around 60 individuals, including faculty members, staff, research scholars, UG/PG students, school children and members of the IIT(ISM) Deepti Ladies Club. As a result of this collective effort, approximately 321 saplings were planted across the IIT (ISM) Dhanbad campus and at the IIT (ISM) Complex, near SBI Bank. These included a diverse mix of fruit-bearing (E.g.: Guava, Jamun, Jackfruit, Litchi, Mango, Papaya); forest (E.g.: Banyan, Karanja, Kumkum, Neem, Pipal, Semal, Teak); evergreen (E.g.: Bakul, Kamini), flowering (E.g.: Amaltash, Harshingar, Jacaranda, Kachnar); and palm (E.g.: Coconut) plant species, significantly contributing to the institute’s green cover and environmental sustainability goals, promoting urban greening for enhanced environmental wellness and climate resilience.
Event 03:
Lastly, a vibrant Sit-&-Draw / Poster Making Competition for school children and UG/PG students on this year’s World Environment Day theme, “Ending Plastic Pollution” was organized. The competition aimed to foster awareness and encourage creative expression among young minds on one of the most pressing environmental issues of our time. The event was held at Student Activity Centre (SAC), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM and was conducted across five categories, ensuring inclusive participation across age and academic levels. The main objective was to motivate students to visualize and creatively communicate solutions to combat plastic pollution through art and design.
The competition was inaugurated by Mrs. Sakuntala Mishra - President, Deepti Ladies Club, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, in the presence of Prof. Alok Sinha - HOD, Department of ESE & Coordinator, EIACP (PC-RP), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad; Prof. Manish Kumar Jain and Prof. Vipin Kumar, Professors in the Department of ESE, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad. Mrs. Mishra personally interacted with the enthusiastic participants, discussing their thoughts and artistic interpretations on plastic pollution, thus inspiring the youth to become changemakers in environmental conservation. Before the commencement of the competition, all participants along with their parents and guardians took the “Mission LiFE” Pledge, read by Dr. Avantika Chandra - Information Officer, EIACP (PC-RP), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad. The pledge reinforced collective responsibility and individual commitment toward adopting environmentally sustainable practices and eliminating plastic pollution.
Participants were provided with kits containing art materials to support their creativity. To further spread the message of sustainability, cloth bags were distributed to participants, along with placards and posters bearing awareness messages to amplify the campaign against plastic pollution among students, as well as the accompanying parents, guardians and teacher. The competition received an overwhelming response, with around 190 online registrations and a total participation of over 215 students in the drawing and poster-making activity. Including teachers, guardians, and parents who accompanied the students, the event witnessed an overall footfall of approximately 350 individuals, creating a vibrant and inspiring environment for environmental education and action.
Through this event, the EIACP Programme Centre, Department of ESE, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad successfully empowered the younger generation to voice their concerns about plastic pollution and demonstrated the power of creativity in driving meaningful environmental change.
The events were organized under the valuable guidance and support of Prof. Sukumar Mishra - Director, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad; Prof. Dheeraj Kumar - Deputy Director, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad; Prof. Sunil Kumar Gupta - Dean (Student Welfare), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad; Prof. Alok Sinha – HOD, Department of ESE & Coordinator, EIACP (PC-RP), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad; and Prof. Suresh Pandian E. – Associate Professor, Department of ESE & Co-coordinator, EIACP (PC-RP), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad. The events were further supported by enthusiastic research scholars of Department of ESE, who all volunteered their time and efforts to ensure the smooth execution of the programme, making it a meaningful and memorable experience for all participants. The entire World Environment Day Celebration event was efficiently coordinated by Mr. Bishwajit Das – Programme Officer, EIACP (PC-RP), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad along with Dr. Dhiraj Kumar – Horticulture Officer, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad for the Plantation Drive and Mr. Avishek Baisya - Physical Education & Sports Officer, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad for the Yoga Session.
