Cyclothon: Pedal the Wheels, Turn the Tide Against Plastic Pollution, organized by EIACP (PC-RP), Department of ESE, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad

In the run-up to World Environment Day 2025 and as part of the pre-campaign activities under the national initiative ‘One Nation, One Mission: End Plastic Pollution’, the EIACP Programme Centre (RP), Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, in collaboration with the Sports & Physical Education Centre, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad organized a Cyclothon on the occasion of World Bicycle Day on 3rd June 2025. The event aimed to raise awareness about the growing issue of plastic pollution while also promoting a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle among the IIT(ISM) community and beyond.

 

The event titled “Cyclothon: Pedal the Wheels, Turn the Tide against Plastic Pollution” commenced at the Oval Ground, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad, where participants gathered in enthusiastic numbers. Before the start of the event, Prof. Alok Sinha – HOD, Department of Environmental Science and Engineering & Coordinator, EIACP (PC-RP), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, briefed all the participants about the objective and significance of the event, setting the tone for the activities to follow. The event then began with the taking of the Mission LiFE Pledge, read by Dr. Avantika Chandra – Information Officer, EIACP (PC-RP), IIT(ISM) Dhanbad – reaffirming the commitment of participants toward sustainable living and environment-friendly practices.

 

The Cyclothon was flagged off by Prof. Sukumar Mishra - Director, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, along with his wife, Mrs. Sakuntala Mishra - President, Deepti Ladies Club, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad. In his address, Prof. Mishra emphasized the importance of adopting eco-friendly modes of transport and reducing plastic dependency in our day-to-day lives to mitigate environmental damage.

 

Following the flag-off, the cycle rally proceeded towards the Police Line Market area, Dhanbad, where participants engaged in distribution of cloth bags to local vendors and the public. Through personal interactions and public engagement, the participants spread awareness on the harmful impacts of single-use plastics and encouraged the adoption of eco-friendly alternatives. The rally served as a symbolic effort of “Pedalling for the Planet,” encouraging people to become a part of the larger movement for a plastic-free and healthier future. The event witnessed the active participation of around 100 individuals, including faculty members, staffs, research scholars, UG/PG students, and members of the IIT(ISM) Deepti Ladies Club.

 

The event was organized with the support and guidance of Prof. Dheeraj Kumar – Deputy Director, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad; Mr. Prabodh Pandey – Registrar, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad; Prof. Sunil Kumar Gupta – Dean (Student Welfare), IIT(ISM) Dhanbad; Prof. Alok Sinha – HOD, Department of Environmental Science and Engineering & Coordinator, EIACP (PC-RP), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad; Prof Sanjoy Mandal – Associate Dean, Students Activities (Students Welfare), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad; Prof. Biswajit Paul –Professor, Department of ESE & Head, Centre for Mining Environment, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad; and Prof. Suresh Pandian – Associate Professor, Department of ESE & Co-Coordinator, EIACP (PC-RP), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad. The entire event was coordinated by Mr. Bishwajit Das – Programme Officer, EIACP (PC-RP), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad; and Mr. Avishek Baisya, Physical Education & Sport Officer, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad.

 

The event Cyclothon: Pedal the Wheels, Turn the Tide against Plastic Pollution reflected the shared commitment of the IIT(ISM) community towards environmental conservation and aligned with the principles of Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment). Organized as part of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad’s ongoing centenary celebrations, the event reinforced the message that small actions—like choosing to cycle and saying no to plastic—can lead to significant positive change.
