As part of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad's ongoing centenary celebrations, the EIACP Programme Centre (RP), Department of Environmental Science & Engineering (ESE), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, in collaboration with Yugantar Bharati, Ranchi and MEL-HUB (CoE), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, celebrated World Earth Day 2025 on Tuesday, April 22nd, 2025 at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, fostering meaningful dialogue, awareness, and action in support of environmental protection and sustainable development aligned with this year’s global theme, “Our Power, Our Planet”, which emphasizes the urgent need to accelerate the transition towards renewable energy and a more sustainable planet.
The World Earth Day 2025 celebration at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad commenced with the opening remarks by Prof. Anshumali - Professor, Department of ESE & Coordinator, MEL-HUB, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad. His address set the tone for the day’s events by thoughtfully reflecting on the Earth Day 2025 theme: “Our Power, Our Planet.” In his insightful presentation titled “Competing and Conflicting Land Use Patterns and the Conservation of Small Rivers and Their Watersheds,” Prof. Anshumali emphasized the collective responsibility of humanity in preserving ecological balance, particularly in the face of mounting anthropogenic pressures. Prof. Anshumali elaborated on the alarming degradation of both major and minor water resources, driven by rapid urbanization, unregulated discharge of domestic and industrial effluents, and unsustainable land use patterns. He drew attention to the Damodar River Basin—a critically endangered ecosystem—where unplanned development, conflicting land uses, and natural resource encroachments pose serious environmental and social challenges. Underscoring the urgency for integrated water resource management and better land use planning, he referred to the National Land Utilization Policy (2013) as the “mother of all policies”, vital for addressing these multi-dimensional concerns. He noted that this policy remains essential in guiding the sustainable use of natural resources, safeguarding watershed integrity, and facilitating the transition of informal livelihoods into the mainstream, especially in ecologically sensitive and resource-stressed regions. Prof. Anshumali concluded by advocating for the integration of global and regional frameworks to ensure the resilience and sustainability of natural ecosystems and riverine flows. His call to action highlighted that preserving the planet’s water systems is not only a matter of ecological necessity but also a pathway to sustainable development and environmental justice.
Following Prof. Anshumali’s address, the event moved into the ceremonial segment, beginning with the formal welcome of esteemed guests and dignitaries onto the dais. The traditional lighting of the lamp ceremony followed, symbolizing the dispelling of darkness and the pursuit of knowledge. Floral bouquets were then presented as a gesture of honour and appreciation, marking the beginning of a meaningful day dedicated to environmental awareness and collective action.
Following the presentation of floral bouquets, the inaugural ceremony formally commenced with the Welcome Address by Prof. Alok Sinha, Head, Department of ESE & Coordinator, EIACP Programme Centre, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad. In his address, Prof. Sinha emphasized the urgent need to respond to the twin crises of environmental degradation and energy insecurity. He reflected on the evolution of the Department of Environmental Science & Engineering, from its inception in 1987 as the Centre for Mining Environment to its current stature as a leader in environmental innovation and education. He proudly highlighted that the department was the first in India to launch a B.Tech. in Environmental Engineering Program through IIT JEE, demonstrating IIT(ISM)’s pioneering spirit. Prof. Sinha also acknowledged the pivotal role of the EIACP (Environmental Information, Awareness, Capacity Building, and Livelihood Programme) Centre at Department of ESE, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, which has been recognized as a Centre of Excellence by the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEF&CC), and which has been consistently contributing towards policy dialogues, awareness drives, outreach campaigns, and grassroots capacity-building initiatives aimed at environmental sustainability. Speaking on the global theme “Our Power, Our Planet”, Prof. Sinha emphasized the critical need to transition toward renewable energy solutions and embrace sustainable lifestyles. Prof. Sinha also drew attention to Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment)— A citizen-centric global movement igniting sustainable behaviour for a resilient climate future, and its alignment with Earth Day 2025. He particularly emphasized one of the 7 Mission LiFE’s themes, “Save Energy”, which resonates with this year’s Earth Day call to harness our collective power to heal the planet. Prof. Sinha reflected on today’s major environmental challenges ranging from ecosystem degradation to energy insecurity and the need for proactive, solution-driven approaches, and collaborative responses. He stressed the importance of knowledge exchange as a bridge between research, policy, and grassroots action. In this context, he urged institutions, students, and social organizations to work hand in hand to create a more sustainable and beautiful planet for future generations.
Prof. Alok Sinha then formally welcomed and expressed deep gratitude to the Chief Guest Shri Saryu Roy (Hon’ble Member, Jharkhand Legislative Assembly & President, Damodar Bachao Andolan); to the Guest of Honour Prof. Ashok Kumar Gupta (Professor, Department of Civil Engg., IIT Kharagpur); and to the Patron & Convener of the event Prof. Sukumar Mishra, (Director, IIT-ISM Dhanbad). He also welcomed a distinguished panel of speakers from academic, administrative, and civil society sectors including - Shri Anshul Sharan (Working President, Yugantar Bharati, Ranchi), Shri Arun Kr. Rai (Coordinator, Koylanchal, Damodar Bachao Andolan), Dr. R. K. Singh (Wildlife & EIA Expert), Shri Sanjay Ranjan Singh (Retd. DIG, Govt. of Jharkhand), Prof. S. K. Gupta (Dean-Student Welfare, IIT-ISM- Dhanbad), Prof. Suresh Pandian E. (Associate Professor, Dept. of ESE & Co-coordinator, EIACP (PC-RP), IIT-ISM, Dhanbad), and Prof. Anshumali (Professor, Department of ESE & Coordinator, MEL-HUB, IIT-ISM Dhanbad), each bringing unique perspectives to the day's discussions. Prof. Sinha also welcomed all the distinguished dignitaries, esteemed guests, faculty members, students, members from partner academic institutions, industries, other organizations, and all valued participants. In his closing remarks, Prof. Sinha urged all participants to carry the spirit of Earth Day into their everyday actions, institutional policies, and collective ambitions. He called for a united commitment to protect our planet—not just in words, but in transformative actions that lead to a greener, more equitable world. He encouraged all stakeholders to contribute towards making the planet not only more liveable but also more resilient, equitable, and beautiful, while reminding everyone that Earth Day is not just a celebration—but a commitment.
Following the welcome address by Prof. Alok Sinha, the gathering was addressed by Prof. S.K. Gupta, Dean (Student Welfare), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, who began by reflecting on the origins of Earth Day. He highlighted the pivotal roles of Mr. Denis Hayes and Senator Gaylord Nelson in initiating the first Earth Day in 1970—a global call to safeguard our planet. Prof. Gupta reminded the audience that “Earth is our mother”—it feeds us, protects us, and provides all the essential elements we need to survive, including pure air, clean water, vital minerals, and fertile soil. He expressed concern over the damage done by human activities, especially since the Industrial Revolution, which has led to pollution of air, soil, and water. Highlighting the threats of climate change and the increasing emission of greenhouse gases, Prof. Gupta noted that thermal power plants are among the contributors to environmental degradation. He called for renewed commitment and collective energy to protect natural resources and restore ecological balance. Prof. Gupta also acknowledged the efforts of the Indian government, referencing its National Missions on Sustainable Development and policies focused on environmental conservation, climate resilience, and the adoption of sustainable practices. He encouraged everyone, individuals, institutions, policymakers, and other stakeholders to come together in protecting the Earth and ensuring a healthier future.
Following the address by Prof. S. K. Gupta, the Inaugural Address was delivered by Patron & Convener of the event, Prof. Sukumar Mishra, Director, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad. Prof. Mishra began by talking about the Earth’s unique geographical and atmospheric conditions, which makes it the only known planet capable of sustaining life. This natural gift, he said, is what allows humanity to thrive—and therefore must be preserved through thoughtful action and innovation. Prof. Mishra highlighted the importance of scientific invention and innovation as a double-edged sword: while these advances have propelled society forward, they also come with the responsibility to use them wisely for the sustainability of our environment. He stressed that progress should always be aligned with ecological consciousness. Prof. Mishra underlined the role of research, collaboration, and open dialogue in solving environmental challenges, noting that academic conferences, interdisciplinary discussions, and even the use of modern tools like AI (e.g., ChatGPT-4) can drive creative thinking and impactful solutions. Quoting the scientific principle that “energy can neither be created nor destroyed,” Prof. Mishra advocated for the conservation and sustainable use of energy, especially through renewable sources like solar, wind and hydro power. He emphasized the need to educate and empower the general public about the importance of conserving natural resources and transitioning toward green energy solutions. Concluding his address, Prof. Mishra called for a collective effort—bridging scientists, educators, students, and everyday citizens—to protect our environment and ensure a balanced, sustainable future for generations to come.
Following the Inaugural Address by Prof. Sukumar Mishra, the invited keynote speaker, Shri Anshul Sharan - Working President, Yugantar Bharati, Ranchi, addressed the audience, who began by talking about Yugantar Bharati. Mr. Sharan highlighted the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and emphasized how geopolitical tensions can have indirect yet significant effects on the global environment, such as increased fossil fuel consumption and disrupted environmental cooperation. Mr. Sharan pointed out several critical environmental issues, including glacial melting, biodiversity loss, and the shrinking of natural habitats, all driven by human actions. These disruptions, he noted, are significantly affecting the Earth's balance and climate. He stressed the urgent need for renewable energy conservation, especially as we approach global goals set for 2030. Comparing nations, he noted that countries like China and the United States have made more rapid progress in green energy adoption compared to India, but emphasized India’s potential and growing commitment to sustainability. A major point of concern raised was the widespread use of fossil fuels, which contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, and rising health issues. He advocated for broader adoption of solar panels and cleaner energy alternatives. He highlighted that government subsidies for solar energy are a positive step, making renewable options more accessible to the public. Mr. Sharan also spoke about the ongoing threat of ozone layer depletion, primarily due to pollution and unregulated industrial emissions. He referred to the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement and India’s National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC), pointing out that while progress has been made, implementation still needs to be strengthened. In his closing message, he emphasized that “Earth is our only home” and called for collective action to protect the planet, stressing that when we protect the Earth, the Earth, in turn, protects us.
The next invited keynote speaker was Shri Arun Kumar Rai - Coordinator, Koylanchal, Damodar Bachao Andolan, who shared his valuable insights with the audience. Shri Arun Kumar Rai discussed the concept of Scent Geosmin and the Panch Tatva, representing the five elements that constitute both the body and the environment. He stressed the importance of protecting the Earth by planting trees, likening their significance to that of Lord Shiva. He explained how plants play a crucial role in absorbing carbon dioxide (CO₂) and releasing oxygen (O₂), which benefits humanity. Mr. Rai also noted that groundwater in Jharkhand is depleting due to mining activities and highlighted that rainfall is the primary source of water for the region's rivers. He commended the efforts to clean the Damodar River, reporting it is now 85% pollution-free, largely due to the contributions of Shri Sanjay Ranjan Singh sir.
Following Shri Arun Kr. Rai, the next invited keynote speaker was Dr. R. K. Singh - Wildlife & EIA Expert. Dr. R. K. Singh emphasized the vital role of the Clean Air Acts in the U.S. and the active participation of students in fostering environmental change. He encouraged individuals to "act locally and think globally" as Earth Day approaches, advocating for electric vehicles to reduce pollution and our carbon footprint.
Following Dr. R. K. Singh, the next invited keynote speaker was Shri Sanjay Ranjan Singh - Retd. DIG, Govt. of Jharkhand. Shri Sanjay Ranjan Singh highlighted the environmental challenges faced by Jharkhand, primarily due to mining activities which have severely impacted air, water, and overall pollution levels. He emphasized the critical condition of the Damodar River and the health risks caused by air pollution, especially breathing issues. He also spoke about the destruction of forests and the rising concern of digital waste, which affects mental health.
It was then followed by a special address by Chief Guest, Shri Saryu Roy - Member of Jharkhand Legislative Assembly & President, Damodar Bachao Andolan, who delivered a compelling session titled ‘‘Our Power, Our Planet”, focusing on environmental responsibility and the consequences of human actions on Earth. the detrimental effects of fossil fuel combustion, which significantly contributes to air pollution and global warming. Shri Saryu Roy advocated for a transition to renewable energy sources, particularly solar energy, while also acknowledging the environmental challenges posed by hydropower. He then talked about the history of Earth Day, initiated in 1970 by Gaylord Nelson, alongside the influential work Silent Spring by Rachel Carson that elevated awareness of environmental issues. He also discussed the crucial role of agencies like the EPA in regulating environmental policies was recognized. He highlighted, the uniqueness of Earth as the only known life-supporting planet was underscored, with a grave warning about the threats posed by global warming and climate change due to solid waste and especially plastic waste. Human activities like mining have adverse effects on Earth and its atmosphere. He emphasized that to protect natural resources including wildlife, forests, and aquatic ecosystems. Shri Roy also highlighted that the constructions of big dams is causing serious ecological harm. He emphasized that human activities have worsened the condition of nature, further stressing the urgent need to protect rivers and the environment. Shri Roy referred IIT (ISM) as a “pathological testing centre” for nature, where the effects of human actions are analysed. He urged everyone to be conscious of their respective role in environmental degradation and stop exploiting nature for personal gain.
A key milestone was marked by the signing of a MoU between IIT (ISM) Dhanbad and Yugantar Bharti, initiating the start of a collaborative journey to address environmental challenges and promote sustainable development in Jharkhand.
The Inaugural Session was followed by the Technical Session during which the event’s Guest of Honour, Prof. Ashok Kumar Gupta - Professor, Department of Civil Engg., IIT Kharagpur delivered a keynote lecture on the topic titled, “Transforming Water and Wastewater Management in India: Advancing Sustainability and Energy-Efficient Approach”. Prof. A. K. Gupta highlighted the essential aspects of water resource management and sustainability. The session underscored the significance of effective water usage, addressing pressing challenges and offering solutions for urban water systems. Key topics included the necessity of proper wastewater management, the initiative "Her Ghar, Nal Se Jal" aimed at ensuring clean tap water access for all households, and factors influencing water quality such as pollution. The discussion also covered various water supply schemes, the importance and risks of chemical treatment of wastewater, and the impact of dredging on river dynamics. It further examined the flood risks associated with overburden dumping, the use of alum in water treatment, and innovative sewage solutions specifically for multistorey buildings. Space-efficient water treatment developments in Kolkata, along with a unique double-decker overhead water tank system in Nagpur, were presented as models for advancing urban water storage solutions. Following the Keynote Lecture, a Q&A session allowed the participants to engage in meaningful discussions with the speaker.

Prof. Suresh Pandian expressed his gratitude during the vote of thanks at the Earth Day celebration, indicating that this event symbolizes the last observance of Earth Day, as resources and life have been rejuvenated. He highlighted the need to shift the conversation towards achieving a sustainable quality of life in both the present and future, drawing a parallel to diagnosing and addressing fundamental problems. He thanked the dignitaries, including the Chief Guest, the Guest of Honour, invited eminent Keynote Speakers, the Director, EIACP Programme Centre Team, and MEL-HUB Team members, along with all the participants including Eminent Guests, Faculty Members, Research Scholars, Students, Staffs, People from various institutes / organization, and Press-&-Media people for their significant contributions. The anchoring for the event was seamlessly conducted by Dr. Megha Tyagi, Project Scientist, MEL-HUB, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, whose efforts added to the overall impact of the programme. The event was concluded by singing of the National Anthem.
Overall, the World Earth Day 2025 celebration at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad successfully fostered awareness and discussions on “Our Power, Our Planet,” focusing on renewable energy conservation and climate action. With the momentum gained from this celebration, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad looks forward and remined The World Earth Day celebration was not just an event—it was a reflection of our values and commitment to preserving the planet. The enthusiasm and engagement of around 300 nos. of participants highlighted the potential of youth-led initiatives in driving meaningful changes.
