Mission LiFE Keynote Lecture Series [2025-26]: “Environmental Governance, Audits, and ISO Norms: A Roadmap to Compliance and Excellence for a Sustainable Future”

As part of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad's ongoing centenary celebrations, and under the “Mission LiFE Keynote Lecture Series [2025-26] - Harnessing Innovation for Environmental Sustainability: Policies, Practices, and Partnerships”, the EIACP Programme Centre (RP), Department of Environmental Science and Engineering (ESE), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad jointly with The Institution of Engineers (India), Dhanbad Local Centre on Tuesday, April 1st, 2025, organized a lecture-cum-interaction session on “Environmental Governance, Audits, and ISO Norms: A Roadmap to Compliance and Excellence for a Sustainable Future”, at Seminar Hall, Dept. of ESE, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad.

 

At the outset of the event, Prof. Alok Sinha - HOD, Department of ESE & Coordinator, EIACP (PC-RP), IIT (ISM), delivered a warm welcome address, setting the stage for an enriching and insightful session. Following this, Prof. Biswajit Paul - Professor, Dept. of ESE, IIT (ISM) & Secretary, IEI, Dhanbad Local Centre, introduced the invited keynote speakers, Ms. Gargi Ghosh - Advisor, and Mr. Ishan Mehrotra - Manager Sustainability from The British Standards Institution (BSI), India, providing a brief overview of their professional contributions and expertise. Prof. Paul also highlighted the significance of the lecture topic in the context of evolving environmental challenges and regulatory frameworks.

 

Ms. Gargi Ghosh, Advisor, BSI, India commenced the keynote lecture by providing an overview of British Standards Institution (BSI) and its pivotal role in shaping global sustainability through a unique combination of services and solutions. She elaborated on the importance of ISO standards in driving sustainable development and fostering compliance with environmental governance frameworks.

 

Following her insightful address, Mr. Ishan Mehrotra, Manager Sustainability, BSI, India joined the session virtually and delivered an engaging lecture on the global risk landscape. He emphasized the necessity of shifting organizational ideologies from merely profit-driven approaches to responsible business practices. Mr. Ishan’s discourse highlighted the role of robust environmental governance, the implementation of international standards, and the transformative potential of ISO certifications in guiding organizations toward sustainable growth. He also underscored India’s commitment to global climate action by referencing the Panchamrit Action Plan announced at COP26 by Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, which aligns with the vision of Mission LiFE: Lifestyle for Environment.

 

The session evolved into an interactive discussion, engaging students, research scholars, faculty members, staff, members of Institution of Engineers (India) (IEI), Dhanbad local Centre and other officials (alumni of Dept. of ESE, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad) from various eminent organizations. The enriching dialogue facilitated a valuable exchange of knowledge and professional insights, strengthening the participants' understanding of regulatory compliance and environmental sustainability. Furthermore, the session provided a crucial perspective on how expertise in this domain can pave the way for careers as environmental auditors, enable professionals to develop Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) frameworks for organizations, and ultimately enhance their professional growth in the field of sustainability and environmental management.

 

Overall, the keynote lecture-cum-interaction session underscored the significance of environmental governance, audits, and ISO norms in alignment with Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), which promotes sustainability, regulatory compliance, and responsible environmental practices. It also highlighted how these elements, along with collaborative partnerships and technological advancements, serve as a structured roadmap for organizations and policymakers to achieve excellence in environmental management, ensuring long-term ecological and economic benefits.

 

The event was organized under the guidance of Prof. Alok Sinha – HOD, Dept. of ESE & Coordinator, EIACP (PC-RP), IIT (ISM); Prof. Biswajit Paul – Professor, Dept. of ESE & Secretary, IEI, Dhanbad Local Centre and Prof. Suresh Pandian E. – Associate Professor, Dept. of ESE & Co-coordinator, EIACP (PC-RP), IIT (ISM). The program was further enriched by the support of Prof. Sukumar Mishra – Director, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, and Prof. Dheeraj Kumar – Deputy Director, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad & Chairman, IEI Dhanbad Local Centre. The program witnessed the participation of approximately 95 attendees, including students, research scholars, faculty members, and officials from IEI and eminent organizations like TATA Steel, CIL, etc., making the event a highly engaging and insightful session.
