As part of the historic centenary celebrations of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, the institute organized an R&D Fair cum Industry-Institute Interaction on 1st February 2025 at the Penman Auditorium area of the IIT (ISM) Dhanbad campus. This event served as a platform to showcase groundbreaking research, foster collaborations between academia and industry, highlight innovative technological advancements, and encouraged individuals to adopt behavioural changes in their daily lifestyle by making environment-friendly choices.

The R&D Fair was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Padma Shri awardee Dr. BVR Mohan Reddy - Founder Chairman of Cyient. The ceremony was further graced by the presence of several distinguished dignitaries, including Prof. Amit Patra - Director of IIT BHU; Ajit Kumar Saxena - CMD of MOIL India Limited; Prof. A.K. Mishra - Director of CSIR-CIMFR; Prof. V.M.S.R. Murthy - Director of IIEST Shibpur; and Prof. Sukumar Mishra - Director of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, who served as the patron of the event, along with Prof. Dheeraj Kumar, Deputy Director, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, Mr. Prabodh Pandey, Registrar, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad and other Deans of the institute.

The EIACP (PC-RP) Centre, Department of Environmental Science and Engineering (ESE), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, actively participated in this R&D fair by exhibiting a dedicated stall. The stall demonstrated various patented technologies developed by the department, emphasizing their practical applications and potential contributions to environmental sustainability. Additionally, the stall showcased the Quarterly Newsletter, Monographs, and Special Editions on LiFE: Lifestyle for Environment, published by the EIACP Centre.

A working demonstration model of the patented technology - Integrated River Health Investigation System (IRHIS) developed by Prof. Sunil Kumar Gupta, Professor (HAG), Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, and his research scholar was demonstrated in the stall during the R&D Fair. The IRHIS system provides real-time river-health monitoring data in different time stamps and facilitates remote monitoring of water quality data without any human or environmental interventions. It removes major constraints of the conventional monitoring system, which requires extensive instrumentation, time, and labour while reducing the sample collection, transportation, preservation, and analysis cost and time. The IRHIS system aligns with the Mission LiFE Campaign by promoting sustainable water resource management and encouraging responsible environmental behaviour. By enabling real-time monitoring and reducing resource-intensive processes, IRHIS supports the mission’s goal of fostering eco-friendly practices and reducing human impact on natural ecosystems.

To further the reach and impact of Mission LiFE, the EIACP Centre undertook an extensive awareness campaign during the fair. Informational pamphlets and flyers were distributed, outlining the seven themes of Mission LiFE, a global initiative to encourage sustainable lifestyles. Visitors to the stall also had the opportunity to watch documentary videos illustrating real-world applications of environment friendly practices. A Mission LiFE Selfie Point was also installed, encouraging attendees to capture moments of their commitment to sustainability while taking the Mission LiFE pledge, reinforcing the importance of individual responsibility in protecting our environment.

Under the guidance of Prof. Alok Sinha, Head of the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering & Coordinator, EIACP (PC-RP), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, and Prof. Sunil Kumar Gupta, Professor (HAG), Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, along with the presence of Mr. Bishwajit Das, Programme Officer, IIT (ISM) EIACP (PC-RP), and Dr. Avantika Chandra, Information Officer, IIT (ISM) EIACP (PC-RP), significantly contributed to the event and successful exhibition of the stall. Also, the successful execution of the stall was made possible through the dedicated contributions of research scholars, namely: Ravindra Singh (20DR0117), Sourabh Kumar (24DR0182), Nishant Pandey (22DR0143), Pratima Kumari (20DR0101), Khalid Ansari (24PF0101), Aditya Swarup Lal (23DR0006), and Vishwani Sharma (24DR0312).

The stall attracted around 300 attendees, including faculty members, researchers, industry representatives, and students. Visitors actively engaged with the exhibits, exploring the latest technological advancements while also gaining valuable insights into the Mission LiFE Awareness initiative.

The participation of EIACP (PC-RP) Centre, Department of ESE in this prestigious fair reinforced IIT (ISM) Dhanbad’s commitment to advancing research-driven solutions for environmental challenges. The stall not only highlighted the department’s technological contributions but also played a significant role in spreading awareness about sustainable lifestyles through Mission LiFE. The event successfully bridged the gap between academia and industry, fostering discussions on future collaborations and innovations in environmental science and engineering.
