Date | 30th December 2024:
The EIACP Programme Centre (RP), Department of Environmental Science and Engineering (ESE), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad on 30.12.2024 organized a Keynote Lecture under the Mission LiFE: Lifestyle for Environment Keynote Lecture Series (2024-25), titled “Integrative Approaches to Sustainable Development: Innovations, Challenges, and Solutions”. Invited Keynote Speaker - Prof. Suresh A. Kartha, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Guwahati delivered a lecture on the topic “Systems Concept in Hydrology”.
At the outset of the event, Prof. Alok Sinha, HOD, Department of ESE and Coordinator, EIACP Programme Centre (RP), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad delivered the welcome address, warmly greeting the invited keynote speaker, Prof. Suresh A. Kartha, along with the participants, including Faculty Members, Staffs, Research Scholars, and M. Tech students. Following this, Dr. Avantika Chandra, Information Officer, EIACP Programme Centre (RP), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad presented a brief biography of Prof. Kartha, and effectively setting the tone for the keynote lecture.
The lecture delved into the hydrological cycle, emphasizing its interconnected components such as precipitation, runoff, groundwater, and evaporation. Prof. Suresh A. Kartha provided a brief history of hydrology as a scientific discipline, tracing its evolution and importance in understanding water systems. Prof. Kartha introduced the hydrological cycle as an integrated system and highlighted the dynamic interactions and feedback mechanisms that govern water movement and storage across various scales. Additionally, Prof. Kartha discussed about the Unit Hydrograph, describing it as the linear response of a linear watershed, which serves as a fundamental concept in hydrological modelling and analysis. This systems-based perspective underscores the critical role of hydrology in effectively addressing challenges in water resource management, climate change, and sustainable development.
Aligned with Mission LiFE's 'Conserve Water' theme, the lecture underscores its societal relevance by emphasizing efficient strategies for water conservation, optimizing resource use, and mitigating the impacts of human activities on water systems. The lecture encouraged the adoption of sustainable water management practices at individual, community, and institutional levels.
At the end of the event, Prof. Alok Sinha expressed his gratitude to the invited keynote speaker, Prof. Suresh A. Kartha, for his valuable time and for delivering an insightful and engaging lecture to the students and participants. Prof. Sinha also thanked the attendees, including faculty members, research scholars, and M.Tech students, for their active participation and enthusiasm. As a gesture of appreciation for Prof. Kartha’s contribution to the success of the event and his efforts in advancing the objectives of Mission LiFE, Prof. Sinha presented him with a memento, symbolizing gratitude and collaboration in fostering sustainable water management practices.
With participation from 60 attendees, including Faculty Members, Staffs, M.Tech students and research scholars from the Department of ESE, the lecture bridged academic knowledge with practical applications. It empowered students and researchers to contribute to global efforts like Mission LiFE, fostering a sustainable and water-secure future.
