The Department of Environmental Science and Engineering (ESE), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, in collaboration with the School of Biosystems and Food Engineering, University College Dublin, Ireland, and EIACP Programme Centre (RP) as the organizing partner, successfully inaugurated the 4-day workshop on "Microbial and Chemical Risk Assessment Framework" on 10th December 2024, at GLJT, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad. The event was graced by 75 nos. of participants including, esteemed dignitaries, faculty members, staffs, research scholars, and B.Tech & M.Tech students.
The ceremony began with the traditional lamp lighting ceremony, symbolizing the enlightenment of knowledge and wisdom. The dignitaries on the dais included, Chief Guest - Prof. Prem Vrat, Chairman, BoG, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, Guest of Honour - Prof. Sukumar Mishra, Director, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, Invited Expert - Dr. Rajat Nag, Assistant Professor, UCD School of Biosystems and Food Engineering, University College Dublin, Ireland, Prof. Sunil Kumar Gupta, HOD (CD), Dept. of ESE, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad and Prof. S. R. Samadder, Professor, Dept. of ESE, IIT (ISM) & Convener of the Workshop.
After the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, Prof. S. R. Samadder, Workshop Convener, warmly welcomed all the attendees and provided an insightful introduction to the workshop's objectives. Prof. Samadder emphasized the critical importance of microbial and chemical risk assessment, focusing on hazard identification, exposure assessment, hazard characterization, and risk characterization. Prof. Samadder explained that the workshop would cover qualitative, semi-quantitative, and probabilistic models, showcasing real-world applications from Dr. Rajat Nag's research. Prof. Samadder, further highlighted the workshop’s exploration of the interconnections between climate change and its impact on human and environmental health, aligning with Mission LiFE: Lifestyle for Environment, which advocates for sustainable living and environmentally conscious practices.
This was followed by an address by Prof. Sunil Kumar Gupta, HOD (CD), Department of ESE, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, who addressed the gathering, elaborating on the department's ongoing initiatives and its achievements in advancing research and education in environmental sciences and engineering. He emphasized the vision behind hosting such multidisciplinary workshops, highlighting the department’s dedication to fostering research and capacity building. Prof. Gupta also underlined the department’s alignment with Mission LiFE campaign.
Prof. Riya Dutta, Assistant Professor, Dept. of ESE, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad introduced the Invited Expert, Dr. Rajat Nag, providing an overview of his academic contributions and expertise in microbial and chemical risk assessment, predictive modelling, and environmental health. Her introduction set the tone for the workshop's academic depth and practical applications.
Invited Expert, Dr. Rajat Nag, Assistant Professor, UCD School of Biosystems and Food Engineering, University College Dublin, Ireland, delivered a brief and engaging address, introducing University College Dublin and its School of Biosystems and Food Engineering. He expressed his enthusiasm for collaborating with IIT (ISM) Dhanbad and provided an outline of the key themes to be explored during the workshop, scheduled from 10th to 13th December 2024. Dr. Rajat also conveyed his delight at the strong response to the workshop, with around 60 participants registering, reflecting significant interest in the subject.
The Guest of Honour, Prof. Sukumar Mishra, extended a warm welcome to the participants and lauded the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering and EIACP Programme Centre (RP) for their proactive approach in organizing such an impactful workshop. Prof. Mishra emphasized the importance of fostering international academic partnerships and urged participants to utilize the opportunity for holistic learning and innovation.
The Chief Guest, Prof. Prem Vrat, Chairman, BoG, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, delivered an inspiring address, reflecting on the significance of risk assessment frameworks in safeguarding public health and the environment. He commended the organizers for curating a workshop that integrates advanced methodologies with real-world applications and encouraged participants to contribute to the broader goals of sustainable development.
The event also featured the felicitation of the distinguished guests as a gesture of appreciation. Prof. Prem Vrat was honoured by Prof. Sukumar Mishra, while Prof. Sukumar Mishra was felicitated by Prof. S. K. Gupta. Additionally, Dr. Rajat Nag was presented with a token of appreciation by Prof. S. R. Samadder, acknowledging their invaluable contributions to the workshop and their support for its objectives.
The inauguration concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by Prof. Riya Dutta, expressing gratitude to the dignitaries, participants, organizing team, media & Press and collaborators for their contributions to the workshop's success. The ceremony ended on a patriotic note with the National Anthem, followed by a group photograph, capturing the memorable beginning of this 4-Days Workshop.
The workshop serves as a dynamic platform for knowledge exchange, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and equipping participants with advanced skills in microbial and chemical risk assessment. It emphasizes critical thinking, professional problem-solving, and the evaluation of applied modelling approaches. Participants will utilize state-of-the-art software and quantitative tools, gaining practical experience in designing and implementing quantitative risk assessment (QRA) models. By the end of the programme, they will possess the skills to characterise and communicate risks effectively, contributing to food and environmental safety advancements while gaining practical experience in designing and implementing QRA in multidisciplinary contexts.

Day: I
- Introduction to Microbial Risk.
- Basic Statistics: Fundamentals, Histograms and Distributions.
- Use of different distributions with the @Risk Plugin along with problem solving examples.
Day: II
- Introduction to Chemical Risk.
- Predictive modelling formation and Monte Carlo Simulaition, sensitivity analysis.
- Bayesian statistics with problem solving examples.
Day: III
- Demonstration of sample Excel Model.
- Case study with sample conference paper writing.
- Brief discussion session on participant's problem-based learning.
Day: IV
- Participant's own Problem Solving session with creative thinking.
