Date: 23rd November 2024

On Saturday, 23rd November 2023, the EIACP Programme Centre (RP), Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, in collaboration with NGO INSEARCH, organized a Mission LiFE Awareness Programme. The event, titled "Save Water, Reduce Waste & Clean Air - Empowering Young Minds to Conserve, Reduce, and Breath Clean: Be a Pro-Planet Champion with Mission LiFE", aimed to inspire young minds to adopt sustainable practices for environmental conservation.

The programme began with a warm welcome to the participants, including students from Classes III to XII, dignitaries, faculty members, and guests. The host set the stage by introducing the event’s objectives, highlighting the importance of Mission LiFE: Lifestyle for Environment, a global initiative aimed at promoting sustainable living practices. The host emphasized the role of youth as catalysts for change in adopting environmentally conscious habits to address pressing global challenges.

The first keynote lecture was delivered by Prof. Alok Sinha, HOD, Department of Environmental Science and Engineering and Coordinator, EIACP Programme Centre (RP), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad. In his talk titled “Living Sustainably: Our Role in Saving Water for Future Generations”, Prof. Sinha emphasized the critical importance of water conservation in ensuring a sustainable future. Prof. Sinha discussed practical measures to be taken for reducing water wastage, such as rainwater harvesting, fixing leaks, and adopting efficient water use practices, urging the audience to become responsible stewards of this vital resource. Prof. Sinha also highlighted IIT (ISM) Dhanbad's significant initiatives to Save Water, which includes its comprehensive rainwater harvesting system with 54 artificial recharge structures across the institute’s 218-acre campus, the installation of a grey water recycling plant treating 40 KLD for toilet flushing, and the innovative Matka Plantation Recharge Technique (MPRT) for plantation, reducing water usage by 50-70% and fostering robust plant growth even in rain-scarce areas. These efforts collectively establish IIT (ISM) Dhanbad as a model for sustainable water management within academic institutions.

The second keynote lecture, delivered by Prof. Vipin Kumar, Professor, Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, focused on “Technological Advancements in Waste Management: Challenges and Opportunities”. Prof. Kumar provided a comprehensive overview of modern waste management techniques, including recycling, composting, and energy recovery. He emphasized the role of individuals and communities in reducing waste generation and integrating sustainable waste disposal methods. His lecture was both informative and thought-provoking, shedding light on how technology can address pressing waste management issues.

The third and final keynote lecture was presented by Prof. Suresh Pandian, Associate Professor, Department of Environmental Science and Engineering and Co-Coordinator, EIACP Programme Centre (RP), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad. Prof. Pandian’s lecture titled “Breathing Clean: Identifying Air Pollution Hotspots and Actions to Avoid Them”, explored the causes of air pollution and its impact on health. Prof. Pandian offered practical solutions, such as reducing vehicular emissions, using clean energy, and increasing green cover, to combat pollution and improve air quality. His engaging session encouraged students to recognize air pollution hotspots and take steps to avoid exposure.

Following the lectures, Mr. Ashok Kanth, Secretary, NGO INSEARCH, Dhanbad, addressed the participants. Mr. Kanth emphasized the importance of youth-driven initiatives in environmental conservation. His brief yet impactful address motivated the students to adopt the principles of Mission LiFE: Lifestyle for Environment in their daily lives.

The programme also included Quiz and Speech Competitions, which revolved around the seven themes of Mission LiFE: Save Energy, Save Water, Reduce Waste, Reduce E-Waste, Reduce Single Use Plastic, Adopt Healthy Lifestyles, and Adopt Sustainable Food System. Students actively participated, showcasing their knowledge and creativity in addressing environmental challenges. The competitions were met with enthusiasm and provided a platform for students to express their ideas and solutions for a sustainable future. The entire process was meticulously coordinated and overseen by Mr. Bishwajit Das, Programme Officer, EIACP (PC-RP), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, ensuring its smooth execution and successful completion.

The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr. Avantika Chandra, Information Officer, EIACP Programme Centre (RP). She expressed gratitude to all participants, dignitaries, and organizing members for making the event a success. The anchoring for the event was seamlessly conducted by Ms. Ayushi Kanth, Member, NGO INSEARCH, whose efforts added to the overall impact of the programme.

The Mission LiFE Awareness Programme served as a platform to educate, engage, and inspire future generations to take ownership of the planet's well-being. The students’ active involvement and insightful ideas made the event a resounding success. By raising awareness and fostering discussions on sustainability, the programme empowered young minds to become “Pro-Planet Champions” committed to adopting sustainable practices in their daily lives. The event was held at GJLT, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad and witnessed active participation from 170 attendees, including students from Classes III to XII, school staff, and dignitaries.
