The EIACP Programme Centre (PC-RP) at Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, organized an insightful session under the Mission LiFE Keynote Lecture Series [2024-25] on 22nd October 2024, featuring a keynote lecture and a talk by distinguished speakers from Luleå University of Technology, Sweden.

 

The inauguration of the event commenced with the Ceremonial Lighting of the Lamp, performed by the invited keynote speakers, Prof. Oisik Das, Associate Professor, and Dr. Sarah Conrad, Senior Lecturer from Department of Civil, Environmental & Natural Resources Engineering, Luleå University of Technology, Sweden, Prof. Sunil Kumar Gupta, Dean (Student Welfare), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, Prof. Alok Sinha, HOD, Department of ESE & Coordinator, EIACP (PC-RP), IIT (ISM), Prof. Suresh Pandian E., Associate Professor, Department of ESE & Co-coordinator, EIACP (PC-RP), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, and Prof. Madhumita Patel, Assistant Professor, Department of ESE, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad.

 

Following the ceremonial lamp lighting, Prof. Alok Sinha delivered a warm welcome address, acknowledging the presence of the invited keynote speakers, dignitaries and attendees. Prof. Sinha highlighted the importance of the Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) initiative—an effort aimed at promoting sustainable practices through lifestyle changes—and its alignment with the theme of the event. He extended his welcome to Prof. Oisik Das and Dr. Sarah Conrad, emphasizing the significance of academic exchanges between IIT (ISM) Dhanbad and international institutions like Luleå University of Technology, Sweden.

 

Following the welcome address, Prof. S. K. Gupta delivered the inaugural address, who underscored the immense opportunities available to students at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad for pursuing higher education and research at prestigious global institutions like Luleå University of Technology. Prof. Gupta encouraged students and scholars to take advantage of international collaborations, while emphasizing the value of such academic exchanges in enhancing knowledge and gaining exposure to global best practices.

 

The highlight of the event was the keynote lecture by Prof. Oisik Das on the topic, "The Best from the Waste: Biochar added Wood Polymer Composites". Prof. Das delivered a highly engaging and informative Keynote Lecture, exploring the use of biochar, a renewable material derived from agricultural and organic waste, as an innovative additive in wood polymer composites (WPCs). Prof. Das discussed how this approach could enhance the performance of WPCs while addressing waste management challenges, while promoting sustainability and supporting the goals of Mission LiFE.

 

Following the keynote lecture, Prof. Oisik Das and Dr. Sarah Conrad conducted an extended session and delivered a talk on "Opportunities in Sweden: Master’s Programs and Research at Luleå University of Technology". This session provided valuable insights into the academic, research, and career opportunities available at Luleå University of Technology, Sweden, particularly for students in fields such as mining, geosciences, environment, and sustainable resource management. Prof. Das and Dr. Conrad discussed the practical aspects of studying in Sweden, the unique features of Luleå University of Technology, and the benefits of international exposure and collaboration in fostering a global career. This session greatly resonated with the students, offering them a clear understanding of how international academic exposure could help them advance their careers.

 

The event included a lively and engaging Q&A session, where the participants had the opportunity to interact directly with the speakers. Questions ranged from the specifics of biochar technology to the practical aspects of applying for master’s programs and research positions at Luleå University of Technology. The session provided an enriching dialogue, with participants receiving insightful responses and guidance from the experts.

 

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Prof. Madhumita Patel. She expressed gratitude to the keynote speakers, Prof. Oisik Das and Dr. Sarah Conrad, for their enlightening talks, and to the dignitaries on the dais—Prof. S.K. Gupta, Prof. Alok Sinha, and others—for their presence and support. She also thanked the EIACP Programme Centre Team, the IIT (ISM) administration, and all the faculty members, students, and staff for their efforts in making the event a success.

 

The event took place at the GJLT, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, starting at 6:00 PM onwards, witnessed an active participation from over 150 attendees, including faculty members, research scholars, and UG/PG students from various departments. The session concluded with an engaging atmosphere, leaving participants with a strong sense of enthusiasm and inspiration, many of whom expressed interest in exploring opportunities at Luleå University of Technology for their higher studies and research endeavours. Overall, the event was a memorable and impactful learning experience, contributing significantly to academic and professional growth.
