IIT(ISM) EIACP (PC-RP) celebrated Swachhata Diwas under "Swachhata Hi Seva” campaign on 2nd October 2024

Date:2nd October 2024:

The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was organized on the occasion of Swachhata Diwas, observed every year on 02nd October 2024 under the Swachhata Hi Seva 2024 Campaign by EIACP Programme Centre (RP), Department of Environmental Science & Engineering, in association with Centre of Societal Mission (CSM), IIT(ISM) Dhanbad under the "Swachh Bharat Mission – Naya Sankalp" campaign. This campaign emphasizes the importance of minimizing SUPs, cleanliness, sanitation, and sustainable living, aligning with Mahatma Gandhi's vision of a cleaner, healthier and self-reliant India.

The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has truly become a movement led by the youth, reflecting a commitment to cleanliness and sustainability. As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) this year, the "Swachh Bharat Mission – Naya Sankalp" campaign, running from September 17th to October 2nd, aims to raise awareness about the importance of cleanliness, waste management, harmful effects of plastic, and sustainable practices, encouraging citizens to adopt eco-friendly habits and take responsibility for maintaining a clean and green environment. Together, with collective efforts, we can foster a culture of cleanliness for generations to come.

This year’s theme, "Swabhav Swachhata - Sanskar Swachhata," beautifully encapsulates the essence of instilling values of cleanliness in our daily lives. By involving youth in this mission, we harness their energy and creativity to drive change in communities across the nation. The program successfully raised awareness among students and our society about the vital importance of cleanliness, hygiene, and waste management, aligning with the broader goals of the Swachhata Abhiyan 2024. Through engaging activities like the Swachhata Pledge and Nukkad Natak performances, participants were inspired to take ownership of their surroundings and adopt sustainable practices.

This year the Swachhata Diwas at IIT(ISM) Dhanbad was flagged off by Prof. Sukumar Mishra - Director, IIT (ISM) & his wife Smt. Sakuntala Mishra along with Prof. Dheeraj Kumar - Deputy Director, IIT(ISM), and Mr. Prabodh Pandey - Registrar, in the presence of Deans, Faculty Members, Research Scholars, Student, Staffs, IIT(ISM) Ladies Club Members, Sanitation Workers, Security Staffs and residents of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad campus.

The drive began from Oval Ground with all the participants congregating at the ground for the Swachhata Pledge, during which they took the oath to devote time and remain committed towards cleanliness. Prof. Sanjeev Sahu - Head, CSM, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, recited the pledge and all the participants took the pledge and committed towards devoting 100 hours per year i.e., two hours per week to voluntarily work for cleanliness.

Then after, the Mission LiFE Pledge was taken by all the participants during which all the participants committed towards adopting sustainable lifestyle practices, contributing to the preservation of the environment, and promoting eco-friendly actions as part of the Mission LiFE initiative. The pledge was recited by Dr. Avantika Chandra - Information Officer, IIT(ISM) EIACP (PC-RP).

This was then followed by the Swachhata Rally which began from the oval garden and proceeded towards the IIT(ISM) main gate and Police Line area of Dhanbad city with Swachhata slogans being voiced out by the participants. During the event the intensive cleaning of the campus, vegetable market, fish market, fruit market and nearby roads were carried out. A Nukkad Natak was also performed by the students of IIT(ISM) Dhanbad, aimed at sensitizing the audience about the importance of keeping the surroundings clean and the harmful effects of littering. The street play creatively conveyed the message of responsible waste disposal and encouraged community participation in maintaining cleanliness for a healthier environment. Prof. Sukumar Mishra - Director, IIT (ISM) in his address to the participants of this cleanliness drive and during his interaction with the media personnel said that this drive is not just about cleaning our surroundings but about spreading awareness and fostering a culture of cleanliness and sustainability in our daily lives. Prof. Mishra emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in achieving the goals of the Swachhata Hi Seva 2024 Campaign and urged everyone to actively contribute towards making their city and our country India cleaner and greener for future generations. His words served as a powerful reminder of the transformative impact that consistent, community-driven efforts can have in realizing the dream of a cleaner, healthier nation.

Prof. Alok Sinha, HOD, Department of Environmental Science & Engineering and Coordinator, EIACP(PC-RP), IIT(ISM) also addressed the participants during the event. In his remarks, Prof. Sinha underscored the crucial role of raising awareness about cleanliness, hygiene, and waste management among students and the broader community. He highlighted the unwavering commitment of the EIACP Centre to driving sustainable change through education and outreach, aligning its initiatives with the core principles of Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment). Prof. Sinha emphasized that the Centre remains dedicated to empowering individuals with the knowledge and tools to adopt eco-friendly practices, reinforcing the message that true change begins with collective action at the grassroots level.

A total of 250 nos. of participants including faculty members, students, officers, staff, IIT(ISM) Ladies Club Group, security personnel and sanitation workers selflessly served the cleanliness drive. The event aimed to inspire collective action towards maintaining cleanliness in public spaces, promoting environmental conservation, and fostering a sustainable lifestyle through Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment). With activities such as the Swachhata Pledge, Mission LiFE Pledge, Nukkad Natak, and a community-driven Cleanliness Drive, the campaign highlighted the importance of civic responsibility, environmental stewardship, and the role of each individual in contributing to a cleaner, healthier nation. The meticulous arrangements were overseen by Prof. Alok Sinha–HOD, Dept. of ESE & Coordinator, EIACP(PC-RP), Prof. Suresh Pandian–Assoc.
