EIACP Programme Centre (RP), Department of Environmental Science & Engineering (ESE), IIT(ISM) Dhanbad celebrated the 30th World Ozone Day on 16th September 2024, aligning with the global theme "Montreal Protocol: Advancing Climate Action".

World Ozone Day is celebrated on 16th September each year to commemorate the signing of the Montreal Protocol, an international environmental treaty for phasing out of production and consumption of Ozone Depleting Substances (ODSs), that came into force on this day in 1987. The event by EIACP Programme Centre (RP) was organized to raise awareness about the protection of the ozone layer and highlight the role of the Montreal Protocol in combating ozone depletion and contributing to climate action.

The celebration commenced with the welcoming of dignitaries to the dais with floral bouquets presented by students. The honoured dignitaries included Prof. Sukumar Mishra - Director, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad; Prof. Dheeraj Kumar - Deputy Director, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad; Prof. Alok Sinha – HOD, Dept. of ESE & Coordinator, EIACP (PC-RP), IIT(ISM) Dhanbad; and Prof. Suresh Pandian - Associate Professor, Dept. of ESE & Co-coordinator, EIACP (PC-RP), IIT(ISM) Dhanbad. The event was then officially inaugurated with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries, symbolizing the commencement of the day's proceedings.

Following the inauguration Prof. Alok Sinha - HOD, Dept. of ESE & Coordinator, EIACP (PC-RP), IIT(ISM) Dhanbad, delivered the Welcome Address. At the outset Prof. Alok Sinha welcomed the dignitaries, distinguished guests, keynote speakers and all the attendees to the 30th World Ozone Day 2024. In his address Prof. Sinha introduced the theme for this year’s Ozone Day and emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts for protecting the ozone layer. Prof. Sinha also set the tone for the event by highlighting the contributions of the Montreal Protocol in advancing climate action by addressing ozone depletion and hoped that the day’s discussions would inspire ongoing environmental efforts.

The Inaugural Address by Prof. Sukumar Mishra - Director, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad, underlined the critical role of the Montreal Protocol as one of the most successful international environmental treaties, demonstrating the power of multilateralism in addressing global challenges like ozone depletion and climate change. Prof. Mishra pointed out that while modern conveniences such as air conditioners and refrigerators enhance our comfort, they also contribute to ozone layer depletion with significant environmental repercussions. Prof. Mishra drew a connection between our comfort index and the UV index, stressing that the depletion of the ozone layer is particularly critical for tropical countries like India. Prof. Mishra emphasized the need to balance the use of comfort-enhancing technologies with practices that protects the ozone layer and urged for ongoing research and community engagement to address these urgent issues and achieve sustainable solutions.

This was then followed by the felicitation of the Director by Prof. Alok Sinha and the felicitation of the Deputy Director by Prof. Suresh Pandian with shawl.

The event featured a series of keynote lectures and talks, starting with invited keynote speaker Prof. Mukesh Sharma from Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Kanpur, who joined with us virtually and discussed "Ozone: Basics to its Stratospheric Resurrection". Prof. Sharma explained the science behind ozone depletion, the efforts made to mitigate it, and how the world is witnessing the slow recovery of the ozone layer. The lecture was followed by an interactive Q&A Session, where the audience engaged with Prof. Sharma.

The second Keynote Lecture was delivered by Prof. Manish Kumar Jain from the Department of Environmental Science & Engineering, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad, who spoke on the “Importance of World Ozone Day”, focusing on global and local actions to protect the ozone layer and their impact on combating climate change. Prof. Jain also elaborated on the Mission LiFE initiative of Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, GoI, emphasizing its impact in encouraging individual behavioural changes that contributes to ozone layer healing, and broader environmental sustainability. Prof. Jain's lecture highlighted the critical intersection of personal actions and collective strategies in advancing our environmental goals and addressing climate challenges.

The third Keynote Lecture was delivered by Prof. Suresh Pandian, Associate Professor, Department of Environmental Science & Engineering and Co-coordinator, EIACP (PC-RP), IIT(ISM) Dhanbad. Prof. Pandian spoke on the topic of "Emission, Accumulation, and Transport of ODSs". Prof. Pandian detailed the significant environmental impacts of ODSs, including their role in ozone layer depletion and the associated risks to climate stability. Prof. Pandian highlighted the challenges in mitigating these effects and provided a comprehensive overview of the global scenario, emphasizing India's progress and commitment towards phasing out ODSs. His insights underscored the need for continued efforts and collaboration to combat these pressing environmental challenges effectively.

The event included a second Q&A Session, allowing attendees to interact with the speakers and discuss various topics in more detail. One of the highlights was a small talk by Mahiksha Amulya, a Class 3 student from Delhi Public School, Dhanbad, who spoke on "Mitigating the Depletion of Ozone Loss" showcasing the involvement and awareness of young students in environmental issues.

During the World Ozone Day event, three significant documentary videos were presented to the audience. The first video highlighted the World Ozone Day 2024 Campaign, emphasizing the Montreal Protocol as a successful example of multilateral environmental cooperation. This was followed by a documentary film showcasing India’s achievements in implementing the Montreal Protocol, which illustrated the country's progress in phasing out ozone-depleting substances (ODSs) and promoting sustainable practices. Lastly, an engaging animation video featuring messages from Prakriti provided an educational perspective on ozone layer protection, offering viewers a compelling and informative look at the importance of conserving the ozone layer.

The event was then followed by felicitation of the invited keynote speakers with mementos in recognition of their insightful lectures and valuable contributions to the event. Prof. Sukumar Mishra – Director, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad felicitated Prof. Mukesh Sharma – Professor, Dept. of Civil Engg., IIT Kanpur; Prof. S.K. Gupta – Dean (Student Welfare) & Professor (HAG), Dept. of ESE, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad felicitated Prof. M.K. Jain – Professor, Dept. of ESE, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad; and Prof. Biswajit Paul – Professor, Dept. of ESE, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad felicitated Prof. Suresh Pandian – Associate Professor, Dept. of ESE & Co-coordinator, EIACP (PC-RP), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad.

The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Prof. Suresh Pandian, who expressed gratitude to the dignitaries, participants, and the institute for their support in making the event successful. He also thanked the media for their coverage, which helped in spreading awareness about ozone protection.

The final segment of the celebration featured the display and evaluation of drawings and posters prepared by participants from various schools and colleges of Dhanbad. The artworks focused on the theme "Promoting Climate-Friendly Lifestyle Practices to Protect the Ozone Layer and Reduce Global Warming by Eliminating Ozone-Depleting Substances (ODSs) and Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs)". These creative displays were appreciated for their insightful perspectives on environmental sustainability.
