Six Week Intensive Course on “Advances in Mine Surveying Technology”

Date | 25th June 2024:

The Six Weeks Intensive Course on "Advances in Mine Surveying Technology" commenced on June 25, 2024 at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad with participation from 82 mine surveyors representing various subsidiaries of Coal India Limited (CIL), such as Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL), Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), Western Coalfields Limited (WCL), Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), and North Eastern Coalfields Limited (NECL) and other private mine excavators. The inaugural ceremony was graced by Prof. Sukumar Mishra, Director of IIT (ISM) as Chief Guest. At the outset of the event Prof. Sagar Pal, Dean (R&D), extended a warm welcome to the dignitaries and provided an overview about the institute and its contributions in the field of mining. Prof. Sukumar Mishra in his inaugural address emphasized the critical role of mine surveying in ensuring safety and efficient resource management in mining operations through the process of measurement, mapping and management of underground and surface mines. Prof. Sukumar Mishra highlighted the potential of advanced tools like Satellite Imagery, Drones, and Aerial LiDAR in detecting surface changes and enhancing operational safety. Prof. Mishra also underscored the collaborative efforts of faculty members across disciplines and mine engineering experts in developing smart sensor-based equipment and technologies essential for modern mine surveying. Prof. Dheeraj Kumar, Deputy Director of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad and Course Coordinator, outlined the comprehensive curriculum, which includes lectures, tutorials, discussions, excursions, and field visits to underground mines emphasizing its focus on digitizing mines and leveraging digitization for achieving "4S mining" – Safe, Smart, Sustainable, and Scientific Mining. Addressing the mine surveyors, Prof Devi Prasad Mishra, Head of the Department of Mining Engineering, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad, urged them to leverage the course to sharpen their skills and stay updated with the latest technological innovations. Prof Vasanta Govind Kumar Villuri, Assoc. Professor and Prof. MD. Soyeb Alam, Asst. Professor of Department of Mining Engineering, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad and Course Co-coordinators, highlighted the course's significance in training experienced surveyors, many of whom have more than a decade of experience in their respective organizations and expressed gratitude to all stakeholders for their support in organizing this valuable program.

This Six Week Intensive Course organized by the Department of Mining Engineering in collaboration with TEXMiN Foundation, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad focuses on educating mine surveyors about advancements in Geodesy, Remote Sensing, Geographic Information System (GIS), Slope Stability, and Subsidence Monitoring. These technologies play a pivotal role in accurate measurement, mapping, and management of underground and surface mines, thereby mitigating risks such as inundations, roof falls, and equipment damages. This course also underscores the commitment of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad and TEXMiN towards fostering innovation and sustainability in the coal mining industry through cutting-edge technological advancements.
