The EIACP (PC-RP) at the Department of Environmental Science & Engineering, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad celebrated World Environment Day on 5th June 2024. The event involved students, research scholars, faculty members, and staffs in various activities focusing on this year’s theme: "Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience" under the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration”.
The celebration was honored by the presence of Prof. Sukumar Mishra, Director, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad as the Chief Guest accompanied by his wife, Madam Smt. Sakuntala Mishra.
The day's activities began with a warm reception for Prof. Sukumar Mishra and Madam Smt. Sakuntala Mishra by Prof. Anshumali – HOD, Dept. of ESE & Coordinator, EIACP (PC-RP), IIT(ISM), along with Dr. Dhiraj Kumar - Horticulturist, IIT(ISM) and Mr. Ram Manohar - SSO, IIT(ISM), at the Director’s Bungalow. The event commenced with tree plantation in the garden at the Director’s Bungalow by Prof. Sukumar Mishra and Madam Smt. Sakuntala Mishra.
Following this, a plantation drive was conducted under the guidance of Prof. Anshumali in collaboration with the Horticulture Department, IIT(ISM). The drive was inaugurated by Prof. Sukumar Mishra, by planting a tree using the Matka Plantation Recharge Technique (MPRT) at Rosaline Hostel, IIT(ISM). The drive saw enthusiastic participation from students, research scholars, faculty members, and staff, resulting in the plantation of approximately 400 numbers of plants, including fruit, forest, evergreen species and value-added plants across the campus. Prof. Mishra was also shown the significant success of the Tectona seedling at the experimental garden of the Department of Environmental Science & Engineering. This particular seedling, which was planted using the Matka Plantation Recharge Technique (MPRT) on June 23, 2023 and measuring 20 centimeters (0.65 ft.) height, has impressively grown to a height of 8.3 ft. as measured today (05.06.2024, after 348 days). Prof. Mishra was informed about the benefits of MPRT and how it can serve as a low-cost nature-based solution for environmental restoration, particularly in mined-out areas, river fronts, degraded forest land, hilly terrains, and agroforestry in rainfed regions.
Subsequently, Prof. Sukumar Mishra inaugurated the Sit-&-Draw Competition and Essay Writing Competition at Seminar Hall of Dept. of ESE. Prof. Sukumar Mishra and madam Smt. Sakuntala Mishra, along with Prof. Anshumali and faculty members of Dept. of ESE, interacted with the participants, comprising of school children from Nursery to Class XII from various schools of Dhanbad city. They discussed environmental issues, climate change, and the individual’s role in contributing to a sustainable future and a healthy environment.
The Sit-&-Draw Competition and Essay Writing Competition, organized by IIT(ISM) EIACP (PC-RP), was aimed to encourage students to express their creativity and ideas on environmental protection. The competitions saw active participation, with 85 nos. of students participating in the Sit-&-Draw Competition and 12 nos. of students participating in the Essay Writing Competition. These events aimed to inspire the younger generation to actively participate in safeguarding our environment. The celebration of World Environment Day 2024 at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad successfully engaged the community, with 250 nos. of participants comprising school children, UG/PG students, research scholars, faculty members, staff, gardeners, sanitation workers, guards, and others. This inclusive gathering highlighted the collective commitment of the IIT (ISM) Dhanbad community towards fostering a greener and more sustainable future.
