Success of the Tectona Seedling using Matka Plantation Recharge Technique
Experimental Garden, ESE Department of ESE, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad.

Matka Plantation Recharge Technique (MPRT), an initiative taken by EIACP (PC-RP), Department of Environmental Science & Engineering, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, under the Mission LiFE activity, has demonstrated significant success. This technique, which employs traditional groundwater recharge methods, was used to plant a Tectona seedling measuring 20 centimeters (0.65 ft.) height in the Experimental Garden of the Department of ESE on June 23, 2023. After 325 days, on May 13, 2024, it was observed that the Tectona seedling had grown into a height of 7.5 ft. sapling, showcasing remarkable growth within just eleven months.

The stats of the plant were measured by Prof Anshumali, Head, Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, and Coordinator IIT (ISM) EICAP (PC-RP), Mr. Bishwajit Das, Programme Officer, IIT(ISM) EIACP (PC-RP) and Mr. Sanchit, Research Scholar, Dept. of ESE on 25.09.2023 (after 94 days), on 21.11.2023 (after 151 days), on 03.01.2024 (after 194 days) on 23.01.2024 (after 214 days) and on 13.05.2024 (after 325 days).

Prof Anshumali, Head, Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, & Coordinator EICAP (PC-RP) said, “MPRT is a nature-based solution to environmental problems especially restoration of mined out areas, river fronts, degraded forest land, hilly terrains, agroforestry in rainfed areas etc. The MPRT is a very low-cost technique to achieve, Reduction Emission from Deforestation Degradation in Developing Countries (REDD +) and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) commitments made by Government of India”.
