Inaugural Ceremony of “Rapid Organic Waste Stabilizer (ROWS) - A Patented Technology for Converting Solid Organic Waste into Organic Fertilizer”

Department of Environmental Science & Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology (ISM) Dhanbad on 24th March, 2022 organized the inaugural ceremony of the Rapid Organic Waste Stabilizer (ROWS) installed at the 48 quarter of the IIT(ISM), Dhanbad. The ROWS is a machine designed for rapid conversion of solid organic waste into a nutrient rich organic fertilizer. ROWS takes around 4 - 6 hours to convert the solid organic waste into a completely dried powder form end product rich in NPK. Around 20 - 25 kg of organic fertilizer could be produced by feeding 100 kg of the SOW.

At the outset of the Programme anchor Nitin Kumar, welcomed the, chief guest, guest of honor, dignitaries, faculty members, staffs, persons from press and media, students, and research scholars. The dignitaries on the dais were felicitated with the flower bouquet.

 

Prof. S. K. Gupta, started the event by giving a brief presentation on the technology. Prof. Gupta discussed about the scenario of waste generations and limitations in the existing technology for the treatment of waste. He added that the “Swaach Bharat Mission” phase II, encourages the bulk waste generators to use mechanized composters for the treatment of the solid organic waste. He discussed about the need of the present invention, and gave a detailed outline about this technology. He said that ROWS is capable of converting the solid organic waste into a nutrient rich organic fertilizer within 4-6 hours. He ended his presentation by quoting that this technology could proof to be a milestone for the recycling of nutrients i.e., “From the Nature to the Nature”.

 

Prof Rajiv Shekhar: The Director in his address to the audience talked about the ways the IIT(ISM) Campus is administering towards conservation of environment such as commencing ROWS at 48 quarter for the treatment of all the solid organic waste. He said that ISM is also conserving the water through rain water harvesting system. He added that sewage treatment plants in the campus treats all the waste water generated within the campus and the treated water is being used for the horticulture need.

 

Invited Guest of Honor: Shri Satyendra Kumar, Nagar Ayukt, Dhanbad Municipal Corporation, congratulated the team for the development of this machine. He said that this technology would be very useful for municipalities and the Nagar palikas for the management of solid organic waste.

 

Invited Chief Guest Honor: Shri Sandeep Singh, Deputy commissioner, Dhanbad said that Dhanbad is generating about 162 tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW) per day and approx. 50 - 60% of the MSW consisted of solid organic waste. He said that we need to scale up such technologies for the sustainable management of MSW.

 

Prof. Alok Sinha proposed the vote of thanks at the end and then everybody headed towards UGC colony for the formal inauguration of the ROWS. The D.C. Dhanbad inaugurated the ROWS by cutting the ribbon and switching on the machine. A live demonstration of the ROWS was given to all the dignitaries,eminent guests, faculty members, staffs, persons from press and media, students, and research scholars present over there.
