Annual Mines Safety Week - Tata Steel (Ranchi-Koderma Region)

West Bokaro Division of Tata Steel along with Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) celebrated 60thAnnual Mines Safety Week (Ranchi-Koderma Region) under the aegis of Directorate General Mines Safety (DGMS), South Eastern Zone at Tata Steel Sports Complex at West Bokaro on April 22, 2018.

 

The main purpose of this celebration was to involve all mine owners and employees to work towards improving safe work practices to significantly reduce accidents in mines.

Mr Prasanta Kumar Sarkar, Director General, DGMS inaugurated the function in the presence of Dr Ashim Kumar Sinha, Deputy Director General (SEZ), DGMS; Mr K Nageswar Rao, Deputy Director General (CZ), DGMS; Mr Rajeev Singhal, Vice President (Raw Materials), Tata Steel; Mr Awadh Kishore Mishra, Director (Technical / P&P), CCL and Mr Sanjay Kumar Singh, General Manager (Coal), Tata Steel.

The function was kicked-off by hoisting the safety flag by Chief Guest which was followed by inspection of 21 stalls put up by various mining companies like Tata Steel, CCL and NTPC along with vendor partners exhibiting best safety practices and safety equipment.

A total of 170 prizes under different categories were presented to various mining companies on the occasion. Tata Steel bagged 18 prizes under different categories. Quarry SE of Tata Steel West Bokaro Division won the Overall Best Performance prize in Group ‘A’ (Opencast Mines) category, while Piparwar Opencast Mines of CCL was the runner-up in this category.

In the Overall Best Performance Group ‘B’ (Opencast Mines) category, Kathara, CCL bagged the first prize while Giddi C, CCL was second. Kathara Mines of CCL was adjudged as best stall while Tata Steel bagged the second prize in this category.

Appreciating the efforts of Tata Steel West Bokaro Division in Safety, Mr Prasanta Kumar Sarkar, Director General, DGMS said: “When safety is the foremost agenda, 90% of the job is already done. Systematic approach and right attitude can help us achieve Zero Harm. Safety is something that has to be imbibed in our work culture.”

Speaking on the occasion, Rajeev Singhal, Vice President (Raw Materials), Tata Steel said, “Safety is an integral part of our operations. Safety is everyone’s responsibility and is a journey which has to be covered by all of us together. In this journey, we are also taking along our contract employees by giving them proper training on safety.”

Addressing the gathering, Sanjay Kumar Singh, General Manager (Coal), Tata Steel said, “At Tata steel, safety is a way to work. We work with zero tolerance to achieve zero harm target in safety. Slope Stability Radar and lighting in mines are the two major initiatives taken by West Bokaro Division last year.”

Cultural programmes by the students of Tata DAV Public School, West Bokaro, Holy Cross School, West Bokaro and Vivekananda School, West Bokaro won hearts of the audience. More than 1500 people attended the function.

Among those present on the occasion were Directors and Deputy Directors of DGMS, safety board members, union representatives, General Managers, Agents & Managers, officers, workmen inspectors and workers of various mining companies.
