Science Express Climate Action Special (SECAS) Exhibition Train, 2017

After eight successful tours across the country, the Science Express arrived at Dhanbad railway station on Thursday, 27th April 2017. After being redesigned as ‘Science Express-Climate Action Special (SECAS)-II, the mobile exhibition train evoked good response from the public and school children on its stay of 3 days at Dhanbad railway station, from 28th April, 2017 to 30th April, 2017.

 

The ninth phase of the Science Express as SECAS II is scheduled to run from 17 Feb. to 08 Sept. 2017, over 19000 km during which it will be exhibited at 68 stations across India. SECAS focuses on Climate Change and Science & Technology. The exhibition will convey a message about Climate Change and will also be a good opportunity to generate dialogue and discussion.The SECAS II is a unique collaborative initiative of Department of Science & Technology (DST), Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEFCC), Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Railways, Govt. of India; Wildlife Institute of India (WII) and Vikram A Sarabhai Community Science Centre (VASCSC).

 

The state-of-the-art exhibition on board the SECAS aims to create awareness among various sections of society as to how climate change can be combated through mitigation and adaptation. Of the 16 coaches of SECAS, exhibition in 8 coaches developed by MoEFCC, is exclusively devoted to information, case studies and material related to various aspect of Climate change, the underlying science, impacts, adaptation activities, mitigation solutions and policy approaches in a manner that is easy to understand and interesting for not just school students but also the masses. In rest of the rake, there are exhibits and activities put up by DBT and DST.

 

The mobile exhibition train was inaugurated for display to the school children and common public on 28th April, 2017 by the DRM Mr. A.K. Akhor and along with him other guests of honor who were present were Senior DCM Mr. Ashish Jha and Head of the Department of Environmental Science & Engineering, IIT (ISM), Dhanbad & Coordinator IIT(ISM) ENVIS CentreProf. A.K. Singh.

 

Over 4,000 persons, including school children, visited the mobile exhibition train during its 3 days stay at Dhanbad railway station. They showed keen interest for the exhibitation and participated in the activities with enthusiasm. A small survey was conducted among the school children by IIT(ISM) ENVIS Centre along with two research scholars from the Department of Environmental Science & Engineering, Mr. Sandeep Kumar Chaudhry(JRF) and Mr. Ambasht Kumar (JRF) along with the help of the SECAS staffs on "How school children commute to-and-fro between their home and school"

 

According to Vikram A Sarabhai Community Science Centre-Ahmedabad's executive director Dilip Sarkar, the aim of running the Science Express is to transform the vehicle into a people's movement and motivate them to take individual actions to fight climate change. Its target audience is the "youth of the country".

 

"One can learn about climate change, climate action, biotechnology and science innovations through the exhibits. This is the ninth tour of the Science Express since 2007. It holds the record for the largest, longest running and most visited mobile science exhibition with six entries in the Limca Book of Records,"
