Illegal sand mining: 42 boats seized

 

Mangaluru | Feb 04, 2019: The Mangaluru City police and officials from the department of mines and geology on Saturday raided a private dockyard at Ulaibettu and seized 42 boats, five tippers, two bulldozers and heaps of sand that were deposited in portions.

 

The total value of the seized items, including sand, is Rs 1.2 crore, police said.

 

The dockyard is owned by Raviraj, 45, a resident of Ulaibettu.

 

Based on a tip-off that Yusuf, Isaq, Asan, Sharief, Vinay Shetty and Yashwanth Alva were seen extracting sand from the river Phalguni in the CRZ area, the police from the Anti-Rowdy Squad, Mangluru South and Mangaluru Rural police station, raided the dockyard in the presence of ACP Rama Rao and mining department deputy director Padmashri and officer Murthy.

 

In another case, the police also seized a tipper truck carrying sand that was found plying on an unauthorised route for business purpose. Police said the sand was extracted from Thumbay. The total cost of the items seized is Rs 10.2 lakh.

 

Both cases have been handed over to the department of mines and geology for further investigation.
