Eight dumpers with illegal sand, mining machines seized

INDORE | Jan 30, 2019: A joint team of police and Ujjain district administration officials carried out a raid against illegal sand mining being carried out on banks of Gambhir river on Tuesday. The team seized three earth movers, two tractors, 1000-metre-long pipeline and two engines from the spot. The officials also seized eight dumpers filled with sand.

Mining inspector Jaydeep Namdev told TOI that they had received information about illegal sand mining being carried out in backwaters at Badwai village behind Gambhir dam resthouse. Five modern set-ups were also put in place for it. When the officials reached the spot, the miners came from other side of the river and drowned three of the five set-ups in water.

The miners were using a very modern technique to excavate sand from the riverbed and collected on the banks. The equipment thrown in the river will be fished out soon, Namdev said.

“Action against illegal sand mining is being taken as per rules,” Ujjain collector Shashank Mishra said.
