Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad organized Three-day Training Program on Occupational Health, Safety & Environment at ISM Industry Institute Interaction Facility, Kolkata during August 18-20, 2016.

 

The Inaugural Function of this Training Program was held on 18th August, 2016 (10.00 AM) at ISM Industry Institute Interaction Facility, Kolkata. Dr B K Mishra, Assistant Professor, explained the background of this training program highlighting strength and capabilities of Indian School Mines in academic and research field. Prof A K Pal highlighted different aspects of OSH, i.e., major Occupational risks & diseases, Constitutional mandate, Supreme Court Judgements, major Challenges of OSH due to the complexity of the problem, Existing Policy & Legislative framework, ILO Conventions addressing the issue of OSH as well as National Policy on Safety, Health & Environment at work.

 

28 participants from different organizations, namely WCL, CMPDI, UCIL, CCL, Tata Steel, MECL, NMDC, SCCL, Neyveli Lignite, SECL and MCL attended this Training Program.

 

Occupational health is mainly concern on maintenance and promotion of workers’ health and working capacity; improvement of working environment and work to become conducive to safety & health; and development of work organizations and working cultures in a direction which supports health and safety at work

 

Occupational safety and health risk factors vary depending on the specific sector and industry. Organization of all kinds are now increasingly concerned with achieving and demonstrating sound occupational health and safety (OH&S) practices by controlling risks inconsistent with their OH&S policy and objectives. It is in the context of increasingly stringent legislation, development of economic policies and Sustainable Development practices the OHSAS guidelines provide awareness and implementation of these issues.

 

Under this circumstances, this present course of 3-day duration has been planned meticulously and structured accordingly in order to discuss following aspects in connection with Occupational Health & Safety problems.

  • Occupational health and safety concern
  • Sources of occupational stress and application of ergonomics to OH&S
  • Occupational dust related respiratory diseases
  • Occupational noise and whole body vibration problems
  • Occupational Heat Stress problem
  • Risk assessment and Management
  • Occupational health & safety management system & OHSAS 18001
  • Emergency preparedness and response

 

Dr Ashit Kumar Mukherjee, Former Scientist F and Officer-in-charge, Regional Occupational Health Centre (Eastern), Kolkata delivered a splendid talk on occupational dust-related respiratory disorders for mining areas. Similarly Dr B B Mondal, Dy Director, NIMH, Nagpur had a fruitful discussion on Noise Mapping and Whole Body Vibration problems in Surface Mine.

 

All the Participants had shown their keen interest and involvement in all the aspects of this training programme as reflected by their interaction for almost all the sessions. As such, it is expected that this programme certainly helped them to augment their knowledge which can be useful to know, adopt and practice at their respective organizations on Occupational Health, Safety & Environmental issues.
