On 31st October 2023, to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, renowned as the ‘Iron Man of India’, the EIACP Programme Centre (RP) at Department of Environmental Science & Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology (ISM) Dhanbad observed “Rashtriya Ekta Diwas” and pledged to unite together for Plastic Free and Sustainable Environment under Mission LiFE Campaign.
On this occasion, Prof. Anshumali, Head, Dept. of ESE and Coordinator, EIACP (PC-RP), IIT(ISM) Dhanbad, delivered a Keynote Lecture and raised awareness about environmental issues like Single-use plastics (SUPs) and their harmful effects on the environment as well as human health. He spoke about the role of adopting sustainable practices in our lifestyle to reduce SUPs. In line with World Sustainability Day 2023 (which is obserevd every year in the month of October on 4th Thursday, this year it was on 26.10.2023) Prof. Anshumali during his lecture also emphasized the rejuvenation and conservation of the existing water bodies, a solution to the water woes, and a support for the revival of biodiversity and reminded everyone that small, individual efforts collectively will contribute to a greener, more sustainable planet and by practicing such lifestyle we all individuals will be recognised as Pro Planet Person. Prof. S.K. Maiti, Professor(HAG), Dept. of ESE, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad, in his address, talked about the urgent need for innovative and effective solutions with a holistic approach for restoring ecosystems and building a sustainable future for the planet. Prof. P.K. Singh, Professor, Dept. of ESE, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad, in his address, expressed grave concern about ecosystem destruction and biodiversity losses which is compounding the risks posed by climate change, thus a multidimensional approach with a broader strategy that includes actively reducing greenhouse gas emissions, transitioning to renewable energy sources, and adopting sustainable practices across various industries is the need of the hour. An awareness session on Mission LiFE was also held during the program.
To mark this occasion IIT(ISM) EIACP (PC-RP) organized distribution of cotton/jute bags and encouraged all to use these cloth bags instead of plastic bags with the vision of a plastic-free Dhanbad city. The bags were distributed by Prof. Anshumali (HOD/ESE & Coordinator/EIACP(PC-RP)), Prof. S.K. Maiti (Professor/HAG), and Prof. P.K. Singh (Professor). A total of 75 participants including Faculty Members, PhD Research Scholars, M. Tech students, Technical officers, Dept. staff, and Sanitation workers participated in the event.
