Waste generation and its management is the major concern in the Steel industry. improper management of the waste can impact the industry environmentally and socially. thus proper management of the waste is required to meet the legal requirement and to avoid the non-compliances. At JSW plant, 8000 tpd tailings is being generated by beneficiary plant (BP-2). Construction of tailings pond was done in an unplanned manner. Different types of waste materials are used for dyke construction creating the heterogeneity within the embankment. This could affect the flow characteristics of water within the embankments, therby affecting the overall stability. therefore an immediate remedial measures needs to be taken to tackle this problem. The employees responsible for the management of the bund stability and solid waste are unaware of environmental problems, its legal obligations and impacts, there is a concern over the management of tailings and solid waste.
In this regard JSW Steel organized a 2-day workshop during 8th and 9th September 2023, on the Tailing Management, Bund Stability and Solid Waste Management and its legal requirement for the Department Heads, Section In-Charges, Section Heads, Stores department and Commercial department inside the plant premises to sensitize the concern person with the issues and its impacts along with practical exposure to the participants on Tailings and Solid Waste Management.
Prof. Anshumali, HOD, Department of Environmental Science & Engineering and Coordinator, EIACP (PC-RP), IIT(ISM) Dhanbad and Prof. Sarat Kumar Das, HOD, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad delivered Keynote Lectures during the program. Prof. Anshumali in his keynote lecture briefed about the Waste Reduced (Swachhata Actions) theme under Mission LiFE: Lifestyle for Environment and highlighted the waste reduction strategies and policies.
