IIT(ISM) EIACP (PC-RP), Department of Environmental Science & Engineering on 31st May 2023 organized a keynote lecture, as a part of Mission LiFE Programme and as a part of activities to the run up to World Environment Day 2023 at GJLT, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad.
Dr. Rajendra Singh, Founder and President of Tarun Bharat Sangh, also known as “Waterman of India” was the Chief Guest and invited Keynote Speaker of the programme.
At the outset of the inaugural ceremony, Prof. Anshumali, HOD, Department of Environmental Science & Engineering and Coordinator, EIACP (PC-RP), IIT(ISM) Dhanbad welcomed the Chief Guest Dr. Rajendra Singh, Prof. Dheeraj Kumar (Deputy Director, IIT-ISM Dhanbad), Prof. Riya Dutta, Eminent Guests, Faculty Members, Research Scholars, Students and Participants. In his welcome address he talked about the importance of water bodies for the survival and existence of bio-diversity. He narrated the journey of Dr. Rajendra Singh since he founded Tarun Bharat Sangh in the year 1975 and under his leadership how more than 1,200 villages in the country are now water secure.
Prof. Dheeraj Kumar, Deputy Director, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad during his inaugural address talked about Mission LiFE Programme and informed about the environmental activities and awareness programmes going on under Mission LiFE at IIT (ISM), Dhanbad. He also said that IIT (ISM) has three sewage treatment plants that are working and treating wastewater (approximately 780 KLD) generated by the institute and the treated wastewater is currently being utilized for gardening purposes, in line with the Save Water theme of Mission LiFE.
Dr. Rajendra Singh delivered a keynote lecture on the topic “Solving the scriptural climate change crisis from the experiences of Tarun Bharat Sangh”. In his lecture he talked about the differences between Siksha and Vidhya in which he said Siksha can be achieved through three disciplines which are Technology, Engineering, Science and Management, while, Vidhya can be gained by the balance of nature and humanity. He further added that we cannot achieve happy and healthy lifestyle by underestimating the natural resources. He worked on towards saving Aravalli range and by his active actions 28000 mines were closed which were a major issue in recharging of water bodies in those regions. Dr. Singh described how with his life experiences, indigenous, and traditional knowledge, he constructed over 14000 dam, water storing structures without using iron and steel as a construction material and successfully recharged over 2.5 Lakh wells. Dr. Singh has been instrumental in fighting the slow bureaucracy, mining lobby and has helped villagers take charge of water management in their semi-arid regions.
The event concluded with the vote of thanks delivered by Prof. Riya Dutta, Assistant Professor, Dept. of ESE, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad followed by taking the Mission Lifestyle for Environment Pledge and singing of the National Anthem. A total of 150 nos. of participants attended the programme.
