THREE DAYS HANDS-ON TRAINING PROGRAMME
on
AIR, WATER POLLUTION AND SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES
FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS

(11-13 MARCH 2022)

ENVIS Resource Partner: IIT(ISM) ENVIS Centre at Department of Environmental Science & Engineering (ESE), Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) Dhanbad organized a three days hands-on “Training Programme on Air, Water Pollution and Solid Waste Management Practices” for college students from all over India during 11-13 March, 2022 under ‘Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat’, an initiative by Indian Government for creating and providing an environment which promotes learning between States by sharing best practices and experiences. The purpose of this training programme was to provide a hands on experience in analysis of various parameters of air, water pollution and solid waste samples in different laboratories of department of Environmental Science & Engineering, IIT(ISM), Dhanbad. The water samples of wells, hand pumps, canals and ponds were collected from the various location (Table 1).

The physio-chemical parameter like pH, conductivity, TDS, hardness, alkalinity, acidity, dissolve oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, carbonate, bicarbonate nitrate, sodium, potassium, and calcium etc. were analyzed by the trainees in the laboratory for the collected water samples. The moisture content, proximate and ultimate analysis including energy content using bomb calorimeter of solid waste samples were analyzed in the laboratory by the trainees. The PM10, PM2.5, SOx and NOX in the ambient air samples were analyzed by the trainees.

The IIT(ISM) ENVIS Centre received 98 nos. of registration forms from students of different colleges of India such as P K Roy Memorial College, Binod Bihari Mahto Koylanchal University, Bokaro Steel City College IIT(ISM) Dhanbad and also from other state universities like, Central University of South Bihar, Gaya; Osmania University, Central University of Karnataka, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), and CSIR-CIMFR.
