Centre of Mining Environment/Dept. of Environmental Science & Engineering organised Training Program & Study Tour on “MINE, HEALTH & SAFETY under the Sustainable Management of Minerals Resources Project” under The World Bank aided Project on ‘Sustainable Development of Natural Resources in Nigeria Mining Sector’ during February 11-18, 2012. This program was exclusively organized by Professor Gurdeep Singh for the mine inspectors of the Nigerian Government mining sector. A full day sessions with the DGMS Participants also had interactive sessions followed with the field visits to the Jharia Coalfield including the mining areas of BCCL , Tata Steel, JRDA etc.
Professional Development Programme (PDP) on Mine Safety Health and Environment is being organized for the officials/mine inspectors of the Nigeria under the World Bank aided Sustainable Management of Minerals Resources Project.
This PDP includes interactive Sessions on Law, policy and institutional framework, Safety aspects, mine inspection procedures/Techniques, Mine Rescue/ Disaster Management Plan, Risk Assessment, Occupational Health Hazards, Environmental and Social Impact Assessment, Best Management Practices, Sustainability and concept of Profit Share and utilization of Funds, Rights of Mine Workers, Safety, Health and Environmental Audits etc. Interactive sessions were organised with the DGMS, BCCL, JRDA and a full day Field visit to mine sites on safety, health, and environmental aspects with particular reference to subsided, mine fires and also mine restored areas, to have the first hand experience of the real world situations. Participants also got the opportunity of visiting the Mine Rescue Station at Dhansar where apart from going around the facilities, they also got the demonstration of mine rescue operations covering all the major aspects.
