Seminar on sustainable mining

The GCCI organized a seminar on sustainability of mining last week. Attended by mining stake holders and 40 other delegates the seminar focused on reducing the adverse effects of mining on the environment. Sustainable bio-mining of neglected auriferous resources, role of all stakeholders in the mining industry and forest issues were some of the topics discussed at the seminar. Key speakers included P S Bhattacharya, chief managing director, Coal India, PK Mukherjee, former managing director Sesa Goa Ltd ,S Parameshwarappa, member of SC Committee on mining and ex principal chief conservator of forests, Karnataka and Prof Nandakumar Kamat, botany department, Goa University.

 

Encouraged by the response received through the seminar, Kamat said, “This is the first time everyone has stood united for a cause and even the Goa assembly has unanimously passed a resolution to resolve mining issue at the earliest.” The event was coordinated in the presence of Sandeep Bhandare, president, GCCI.
