3-Day Training Program on "Water Quality and Management for Thermal Power Plants”

Date | Sept 26, 2016

The 3 Days training program on “Water Quality and Management for Thermal Power Plants” was organized during September 21-23, 2016 by Centre of Mining Environment, Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, IIT(ISM),Dhanbad. The course was coordinated by Dr. S. R. Samadder, and number of executives from NTPC, NSPCL, CESC Ltd., have participated in this program.

The program was aimed to highlight and discuss the major water management and pollution problems related to coal-fired thermal power plants. Distinguished experts in this field delivered the lectures for the participants.

  • DAY 1:
It began with the lecture on monitoring and assessment of water covering all the important parameters starting from method of sampling to sample analysis. Following this a session was held on the scientific management and its utilization of fly-ash. At the end of day 1, there was a laboratory visit and demonstration during which the participants got to know about the various instruments involved in the analysis, detection and remediation of the pollutants.
  • DAY 2:
The first session of day 2 started with a lecture on water softening. This was followed by the lecture on analysis of Coal Combustion Residues (CCRs) for better management of surface and groundwater. Following this a session was held on unit operations for treatment of drinking water, where selection and adoption of physico-chemical methods of treatment for water was discussed. Day 2 ended with an excursion trip to Maithon Power Plant.
  • DAY 3:
Day 3 started with a lecture on design aspect of water treatment systems. Moving forward, a session was held on water management in thermal power plants. The training program was concluded with detailed discussion on cooling tower performances using COC for minimal use of water.
