Felicitation of 20 employees for completing 25 years of service, handing over research publication awards to 16 scholars and a visit of over 600 school students from adjoining areas of Dhanbad marked the 90th foundation day celebrations of Indian School of Mines (ISM) on Wednesday.
The function was held at the Penman Auditorium during which the chief guest B.K. Mishra, the director of the Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology-Bhubaneswar, lauded the infrastructure of ISM established in December 1926 by Viceroy of India Lord Irwin on the lines of Royal School of Mines, London.
Mishra, who was appreciative of the upcoming library and the multi-storied gymnasium established last year at the students' activity centre, said a well-equipped library was one of the important assets of any institute.

During his 15-minute speech, Mishra also stressed on the need for institutes to retain a human touch in their teaching and research, which he added, should aim at addressing issues facing society.
Advocating inter-disciplinary teaching and research, he said, "ISM has diversified its subjects adding many new areas, like computer science engineering, electronics and communication, apart from its core branches of geo-science. Such institutes can take the lead in carrying out inter-disciplinary research, say between civil engineering and environment engineering departments, to address environmental issues."?
Earlier, ISM director Durga Charan Panigrahi, who presided over the function, also threw light on the need for research work aimed at developing technology to help address problems ailing society.
"The major stake holders of institute are students and teachers and we as director, deans are the custodians. We must ensure that we address the concerns of society," he said.
Students of various government and private schools visited the campus and took tours of various laboratories, the geological museum, library and classrooms.
Kajal Kumari, a Class IX student of Nirmala School and daughter of security guard Santosh Mahto, was delighted at the opportunity. "This is my second visit to the institute and I am highly impressed with the facilities."
