Odisha has assured bauxite for aluminium refinery: Vedanta chairman Anil Agarwal

BHUBANESHWAR | Aug 30, 2016: Vedanta's aluminium refinery in Odisha will start getting bauxite supply from within the state before the end of this fiscal year, Chairman Anil Agarwal said. He said Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik gave the assurance when they met here on Tuesday.

Agarwal said he was hopeful the raw material woes of the refinery, running currently at a third of its 6 million tonne capacity, would end before the next fiscal year stars in April. Vedanta will also participate in the auctions of bauxite deposits when they happen, he added.

Post the meeting between the industrialist and the chief minister, the state government announced plans to set up a Rs 100 crore medical college in Kalahandi district, which is also home to the Vedanta refinery.

"We have accepted the chief minister's proposal to build the infrastructure on land that the state would provide. A medical college is greatly required in a district like Kalahandi," Agarwal said.

It would be run by the state.

Patnaik's administration is dealing with its worse image crisis in a long time. Visuals of Dana Majhi, a tribal man from the district, having to carry his dead wife's body on his shoulder for ten kilometre because he couldn't afford to hire a van, has shocked the world.
