Illegal mining: HC notice to CBI, CB-CID

CHENNAI | April 1, 2016: The Madras High Court on Thursday ordered notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department to decide on further investigation into illegal granite mining.

The First Bench of Chief Justice S.K. Kaul and Justice M.M. Sundresh passed the direction on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition moved by ‘Traffic’ K.R. Ramaswamy alleging that the State had incurred a heavy loss owing to irregularities in the allotment of mining leases.

When the plea came up for hearing, the Advocate-General submitted that several steps had been taken in pursuance of the report filed by the court-appointed legal commissioner U. Sagayam.

Noting that the questions now would be on the course of further investigation, and whether it is to be entrusted to the CB-CID, CBI or maintain status quo, the Bench said, “We would like to have one more report filed by the State government on this aspect.”
