MP HCs ban on sand mining in catchments continues

The Madhya Pradesh High Court has continued the ban on sand mining in the catchments of Sardar Sarovar and Maheshwar dams.Expressing dissatisfaction over the governments failure to reply on contempt of court petition filed by the Narmada Bachao activist Medha Patkar, Judge Rajendra Menon and Judge SK Gupta yesterday asked the government to submit its report by July 20.In the petition said in its earlier ruling, the court had issued order to the government to submit affidavit regarding stopping sand mining in Sardar Sarovar dam and Maheswar dams catchments, obeying the directions of the Pollution Control Board and submitting reply of the state regime.It was alleged in the petition that despite the courts clear-cut instruction, sand mining continued in catchments. Besides the state government, a reply was sought from the collectors of Dhar and Barwani districts.
