Political parties join hands against mining

Tirupur (Tamil Nadu) | Jun 23, 2015: Representatives of the CPI(M), CPI, DMK, MDMK, BJP, DMDK, and Congress joined hands on Monday to fight for a common cause.

They submitted a petition to District Collector G. Govindaraj stating that indiscriminate mining of gravel, and sand was taking place at irrigation tanks located in Velayudhampalayam, Puthupalayam, Ramiampalayam, Thekkalur, and Cheyur as well as along Kaushikanadhi in Avinashi block.

Unless the district administration intervenes immediately, the entire ecology around the tanks will be destroyed beyond repair, the petition said.

Many hundreds of deer that could be found near the tanks till recently, have moved away after the heavy mining activities, said P. Muthusamy of the CPI(M).

The farmers who are afraid to take on the mining mafia, had expressed the concern that their livelihood would be affected if the irrigation tanks were destroyed.
