Illegal sand miners try to flee, one dies

 

RAJKOT | Jun 11, 2015: A member of a group allegedly involved in illegal sand-mining was crushed under the tractor in which the group was trying to escape near Und dam close to Lakhatar village of Jodiya taluka in Jamnagar district. The deceased was identified as Pancha Limbadiya (35) of Jodiya.

 

The accident took place on Wednesday morning, when officials of irrigation department from Jamnagar went to Und dam after receiving a tip off on illegal sand mining being carried out. "The miners suspected that it was the police carrying out a raid and tried to escape in a tractor from the spot marked by undulating slopes. In the process their tractor overturned and one person was crushed under it. He died on the spot. The agitated group pelted stones on the irrigation department team. An official and a villager received minor injuries and the department's vehicles were damaged," R J Thakar, investigating officer from Jodiya Police station.

 

"The group's lease for mining expired on May 31 but it continued mining operations," said an official. Police have booked Karna Bharvad, Karshan Bharvad, Lala Bharvad and eight others on various charges including obstructing government officers from doing their duty. Another complaint was lodged against tractor driver Shailesh Kumbhar for rash driving. tnn
