MP cop escapes 'attempt on life' for trying to stop illegal mining

Rewa (Madhya Pradesh) | May 17, 2015: A police official in Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district suffered injuries on his legs and hands while trying to escape a possible attempt to crush him under an excavator (JCB) machine at an illegal mining site.

Sunday’s incident harks back to the death of a police constable in Morena district, who was killed on duty when a sand-carrying truck he was attempting to stop toppled on its side and crushed him.

SS Mishra, the sub-divisional official of Sirmaur area, said that the sub-inspector Sirmaur DP Singh was on patrol duty with his team at night when he noticed mining work being carried out.

He then called out to the JCB driver.

According to Mishra, instead of coming to Singh, the JCB driver, in his attempt to escape using the only route there was, almost crushed him.

But he managed to save his life. He fell into a ditch, which caused him injuries on the hands and legs.

Police seized the JCB machine and arrested its driver Manoj Sahu as he tried to flee. A case was also filed against the JCB owner.

Illegal sand and stone mining is a growing menace in Madhya Pradesh’s Chambal region -- of which Morena is a part and such attacks are not unprecedented.

In 2012, when IPS officer Narendra Kumar was mowed down on the day of Holi in Morena as he tried to stop a tractor carrying illegally mined stone.
