Govt allots 67 coal mines, states get Rs 3.35 lakh crore windfall

NEW DELHI | Apr 23, 2014: The government has allocated 67 coal mines through auction, fetching a total of Rs 3,35,370 crore to the states where the mines are located, Coal Minister Piyush Goyal said on Thursday.

In addition, consumers are set to get benefits worth Rs 69,310.97 crore in the form of lower electricity tariffs, the minister said in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha. This is because the power producers who won have forgone their right to pass on mining cost to consumers and instead agreed to pay the government in their efforts to win captive coal blocks.

These blocks are among 204 for which the mining licences were cancelled by the Supreme Court last year. Goyal said there is no timeline set for allocating the remaining mines.
