Nalco issue: Modi seeks Odisha CM’s intervention

Bhubaneswar | Apr 07, 2015: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sought intervention of Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik to resolve problems being faced by central PSU Nalco, which is finding it difficult to get the Pottangi bauxite mines in the state.

Modi, in a letter to Patnaik, has said that Nalco needs intervention at the chief minister level for allotment of the mines.

The Union government had reserved the Pottangi mines in Odisha’s Koraput district way back in 2007. The state government has also accorded in-principle approval for the reservation of the said mines in 2012. However, it has stipulated certain conditions to be complied with by the aluminium PSU for recommending the mines to it.

Nalco, which has achieved maximum capacity expansion of its existing facilities at Damanjodi and Angul, is desperately looking for the Pottangi reserve to undertake an alumina refinery project in Odisha’s Sundergarh district with an investment of R5,540 crore.
