Plea to stop mining

Kozhikode | March 31, 2015: A residents’ action council from Thalakkulathur grama panchayat submitted a memorandum to the District Collector on Monday requesting his intervention to stop the illegal soil mining now in full swing on the Palora Hill. This is the second time that the council has approached the district administration for a favourable action on the issue.

Action council leaders said several potable water sources in the region were hit by the reckless flattening of the hill. The water level in several wells in the panchayat has already come down making the situation worse for the summer season, they said.

Jobish Thalakkulathur, chairman of the action council, said the mined soil from the hill was mainly used for filling private lands for real estate purposes. This should not be allowed at any cost, as people in the region were living under the threat of soil erosion during monsoon and acute water shortage during summer, he said.
