Govt nod for mining at 8 sand quarries in Nawanshahr

Nawanshahr | March 03, 2015: Punjab government has granted approval for excavation of sand from eight quarries in Nawanshahr which would provide sand at Rs 600 per hundred cubic feet to local residents.

Nawanshahr deputy commissioner Ravinder Singh said the eight quarries made operational are situated at Khoje, Behloor Kalan, Jhungian, Saidpur Khurd, Malikpur, Bramad Rail, Kanaun and Lallewal villages in the district and would be apart from the one already operational at Burj Tehal Dass village. The "consent to operate" had been issued to the concerned contractors on February 20, he added.

"Four more quarries will soon be made operational in the district after obtaining requisite clearance from the environment department. Every vehicle would have to obtain permission for taking sand from the quarry which would bring in transparency in the process," the DC said.

The district industries centre had been asked to fix a time schedule from 8am to 7pm for excavation and to ensure electronic weighing machines at all the quarries. Following the loading of vehicle, the bill and challan would only be issued after obtaining online approval from the district industries centre, he added.
