The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has alleged that large scale illegal sand mining in Government land was being carried out in several panchayat unions in Coimbatore District.

The party has urged the district administration to step up the crackdown on the sand mining which, it alleged, was rampant at Periyanaickenpalayam, No: 24 Veerapandi, Nanjundapuram and Pannimadai panchayats.

A delegation led by its party office-bearer N. Balamurthy submitted a petition along with several photographs to District Collector Archana Patnaik during the public grievances meeting held at the Collectorate on Monday.

In their petition, the CPI (M) said that contractors were originally given permission only to desilt the land after rain. In some areas, the contractors had dug as deep as 70 feet.
