Govt plans scientific policy to check illegal mining

DEHRADUN | Feb 26, 2015: In order to check illegal mining in different parts of the state, the government on Thursday decided to formulate a scientific policy in the next two weeks. The decision to this effect was taken at a high-level meeting of top officials from different government departments in the state capital.

Briefing the media after the meeting, chief minister Harish Rawat said he has asked senior officials in mining and other departments to prepare a detailed proposal for the same. Rawat said the upcoming policy will include all necessary scientific measures to prevent illegal mining on different riverbeds in all 13 districts of the state.

"The new policy will not only redefine illegal mining, but will also ascertain distances between rivers and the places allowed for quarrying and stone-crushing," the chief minister said.

Chief secretary N Ravi Shankar said once this distances are properly determined, it will considerably help put an end to the flourishing business of illegal quarrying in the state.
