Greens against State’s decision to dilute mining norms

Kozhikode | Feb 16, 2015: Environmental organisations and green movements in the district have come out against the State government’s recent decision to “dilute the existing norms” in the mining and quarry sector in the State.

In a recently issued notification, the State government had permitted all quarries that had secured their licence before January 9, 2015 to function without the need of any environmental impact study conducted as was earlier stipulated by the Supreme Court.

This “seriously flawed” decision, according various environmental activists, has triggered a sudden spurt in quarrying and mining activities in different parts of the State.
