Proper management of mining industry is essential

 

Nagpur | Dec 07, 2017: The Mining Engineer's Association of India (MEAI) organized a 3-day international conference and expo on 'Mining Industry Vision 2030 and Beyond' which was inaugurated at a city hotel on Wednesday. The event is being organized in coordination with IBM, GSI, MOIL, MECL and NEERI.

 

The inauguration was followed by keynote session on different topics related to mining and exploration. Arun Kumar, secretary, Ministry of Mines, Government of India, was invited as the chief guest and MP Chaudhari, chairman and managing director, MOIL Ltd was invited as the guest of honour on the occasion.

 

President MEAI Arun Kothari, said, "The organization is celebrating its diamond jubilee and the conference is designed to display the remarkable work done by the organization in the industry. Conference will discuss ideas form the participants that can be advised in the policy making and infrastructure development. Mining industry is one of the core industries proving resources to other sectors and its proper management is of utmost importance."

 

DK Sahani, chairman, MEAI Nagpur chapter, said, "Today the markets are open for global economics and business thereby demanding more work ethics in the mining industry. The revision of mineral policies are significant as the further growth and development of the sector depends on the same. The primary objective of the conference is to highlight the best practices of mining industry and its subsequent branches to benefit not only the government but also its people."

 

Chaudhari said, "One of the most important and sometimes underrated characteristics of the industry is sustainable mining methods. The mining policies needs to be acceptable to all the stakeholders and contributing to development of the society as a whole."

 

Kumar mentioned that the industry has at times saw the rough patch due to some policies that didn't work out in the past but the things are changing with the recent Mines and Minerals Development and Regulations Act 2015. "Problems of failure of auctions, improper management and other factors created problems but the scenario is changing and the growth rate is increasing remarkably. The industry is expected to grow at 10% annually but social acceptability is required that the sector is not just an extraction industry."

 

More than 300 mining engineers, geologists, mineral corporates and other delegates from across the country participated in the event which focused on the issues related to exploration, resource assessment, sustainable mining, human capacity, skill development and many more.
