Quarry accident: HRC asks collector to submit report

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM | Nov 28, 2017: The state human rights commission has ordered that functioning of unauthorized quarries should be stopped in the district.

The order has been issued in the wake of Kunnathukal quarry accident.

The commission also sought an explanation on the demand for free medical treatment for the persons who were injured in quarry accident and for compensation for the victims' families.

HRC acting chairman P Mohanadas has directed the district collector and director of mining and geology to file a report on this regard by January 3.

As per the complaint filed by public activist P K Raju, around 90 quarries function without license in the district.

The complainant alleged that the department of mining and geology ignored violations and that quarry owner at Marayamuttam shall be charged with murder.
