Illegal coal mining rampant in Dillighat

Namrup | Nov 8, 2017: The illegal coal mining activities in the Patkai range of Dillighat under Borhat Forest Range is continuing without any check, causing great impact on the natural beauty and environment of this deemed tourist spot. More interestingly, such mining is going on few meters away from the Dillighat Forest Beat raising questions on the role and responsibility of the forest officials.

One of the forest guards expressed their helplessness on the ground as they do not have adequate manpower or forces to stop such illegal coal mining. Earlier, State Forest Minister Pramila Rani Brahma visited Dillighat on February 27 this year and ordered the forest officials to do the needful for the protection and preservation of Dillighat but such illegal mining of coal again proves the failure of the Forest department.

Labourers are engaged contractually by some local people in mining of coal and supplied to different areas of Namrup, Naharkatia and Charaideo. Such illegal coal mining seems like an organized crime and involvement of many players in this regard cannot be denied. If the authorities concerned do not take necessary action soon to stop such illegal mining, it can lead to serious concern in the near future.
