Two cousin brothers drowned in a rainwater-filled stone mining pit in Gwalior district on Sunday.
The incident occurred at Jigniya village under the jurisdiction of Hastinapur police station in the district.
Hastinapur police station in-charge Chhatrpal Tomar told HT that “two youngsters, Ramadhir, 12 and Siyaram, 15, had gone for a bath in the rainwater filled stone mining pit in their village where they drowned. Their bodies were fished out by police and divers and sent for the post mortem”, he said.
Tomar said they have registered a case of death and further investigation was on.
“We are checking the paper work regarding who is the lease owner of the mine. After thorough investigation, we will take a decision on whether a case of death by negligence should be filed or not”, he said.
It is not the first such death. On August 26, two youths drowned in a stone quarrying pit in Satna district. The villagers refused to cremate their bodies initially till some action was taken against people running the mine. After protesting for many hours, they removed the bodies only after a case of “death by negligence” was filed against the mine supervisor and three others including the mine owner.
Incidents related to large scale illegal mining have been regularly reported from Chambal region. Last month, in one of the biggest actions against alleged illegal mining, authorities slapped show cause notices with penalty worth Rs 415 crore against 23 mining lease owners in Gwalior district after they found they were allegedly carrying out blasting in vast swathes of land to mine grey stones, leaving behind a vast scarred landscape filled with pits.
