Interim stay on mining C'very river sand from Mayanurto Trichy

 

Madurai | August 16, 2017:

The Madras High Court bench today granted an interim stay on mining sand in the Cauvery river from Mayanur in Karur district till Tiruchirapalli.

 

Justices K K Sasidharan and G R Swaminathan gave the interim stay while hearing two PILs, including one by Seenivasan of Musiri and posted the case for hearing to August 28.

 

The judges directed the PWD secretary to file a counter.

 

The petitioners submitted that sand was being mined close to the check dams violating the rule that it should not be done within a 500 metre range of the check dams.

 

They alleged that lorries were transporting sand round the clock.

 

The plea to stop mining had also been made by the Public and social activists.
